Svenshögen lies on a west-facing slope in the Bratteforsån valley, between Lilla and Stora Hällungen. There are several practical options to help you plan your trip: a hike along the river, a cycling tour through the village, the bathing area by the lake, and a cultural program in the renovated station building. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Svenshögen, you can start by deciding whether nature, water or culture should be the focus of your trip. There are different time frames to consider: the hike is possible year-round, while a visit to STATIONEN depends on its program. This distinction can help you organize activities and culture to suit your travel day.

Hiking and cycling

The hike along the Bratteforsån is possible year-round; summer is particularly suitable for a jungle-like experience. The commuter parking lot next to Svenshögen station can serve as a starting point. Conditions along the route may vary, so it is worth taking them into account when planning your hiking day. The “Cykla Hällungen runt” cycling tour passes through Svenshögen, but is not marked. The practical difference when choosing between the two activities is that the hike depends on the season and changing conditions, while the cycling tour requires navigating without markings.

By the water

Svenshögen bathing area is located in the northern part of Lake Hällungen. Motorboats with more than 6 hp or 4.4 kW, as well as personal watercraft, are prohibited on Stora Hällungen. Bear these restrictions in mind when planning activities on the water. Svenshögens Sportklubb welcomes everyone who would like to paddle on Stora Hällungen. The paddling activity began in late summer 2025. However, the club’s kayaks are reserved for club activities and training. Contact the club directly to clarify participation details.

History and culture

Svenshögen Sanatorium opened in 1911 and was used as a hospital for tuberculosis patients until the 1940s. If you want to shape your stay around the history of the area, this former use is a specific point of interest. STATIONEN in Svenshögen offers a different perspective: since 2019, the nonprofit association has produced, hosted and presented contemporary art and culture in the renovated station building. Opening hours depend on the program, so check it before your planned visit. The sanatorium’s historical use and STATIONEN’s contemporary cultural program thus offer different perspectives on Svenshögen.
