Månstad: Runestone, Cultural Landscape and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Månstad
On the hill immediately north of Månstad Church, Månstad’s only runestone stands beside the cycling route. Its inscription commemorates Grinulf, the son of Ingwald. The church itself stands on a hill beside the paved former railway embankment that runs through Månstad. Both places offer tangible ways to learn about the area’s history.
Cultural Landscape and History
The Månstad cultural environment [P 56] is an agricultural landscape of high scientific value. It reflects both Iron Age land use and the development of village communities in southwestern Sweden. Visible traces include extensive fossilised field systems with strip-divided fields, clearance cairns and stone rows. Scattered Bronze Age and Iron Age burial sites and well-preserved farm buildings are also part of the cultural environment.
Månstad Church is also part of this historic setting. The church houses a 12th-century sandstone baptismal font, which was returned there in 1954. Visiting the runestone and the church offers an encounter with different records of local history: a commemorative inscription beside the cycling route and a historic baptismal font inside the church.
Cycling Through Månstad
The Ulricehamn–Tranemo section of the Ätradalsleden runs mostly along a car-free former railway embankment. In Månstad, the cycling route passes through a predominantly open agricultural landscape dotted with farms. The Sjuhäradsrundan also passes through Månstad, going through the centre. Its Ulricehamn–Tranemo section is 43 kilometres long; here too, farmland and farms characterise the surroundings.
For a break, there is a barbecue shelter in the station area in Månstad, beside the Ätradalsleden, where you can stop for coffee. There is a shower in the station area on the Sjuhäradsrundan. Before setting out on a cycling trip, check the route conditions and local information about the facilities, as conditions and facilities should be checked locally.
Moorland, Nature and a Swimming Area
Månstad Mini Nature Centre can be reached via an approximately 300-metre boardwalk across a moor. The path is suitable for wheelchair users; check its current condition before your visit. From the mini nature centre, you can enjoy views of Lake Sämsjön and the neighbouring farmland. Formerly waterlogged moorland and marshes also offer beautiful views of the surrounding area.
There is a public swimming area at Södra Sämsjön in Månstad. Its facilities include grassy areas, a long jetty, benches and changing rooms. Check swimming conditions and water quality before your visit. The Sämån watercourse, also called Månstadsån on maps, carries water from Södra Sämsjön through the parishes of Månstad and Södra Åsarp to Lake Tranemosjön.
A Bakery in Sibbarp
In Sibbarp, Sibbarps Gårdsbageri hand-bakes small batches of sourdough bread, rolls and croissants. From Wednesday to Friday, you can check what has been freshly baked that day; when the weather is suitable, you can sit outside. These opportunities to visit may vary seasonally, so check the latest information before visiting.
