Discover Källby
Accommodation in Källby
Lake Vänern connects Källby closely with nature and the water. Culture and history, along with trails towards Kinnekulle, are also highlights of a stay here. Källby badplats swimming area, historic railway heritage and the two sections of the Biosfärleden trail, Källby–Trolmen and Råda kyrka–Källby, reveal different sides of the town. Train and bus connections make it easier to get around. You can explore Källby according to the interests that matter most to you on your trip.
Swimming and outdoor activities
Källby has a small marina. The Källby badplats swimming area has a sandy beach to the northwest and a large open grassy area. There is also a designated area where dogs can swim. Källby Mistaskogen has a 2.0-kilometre floodlit fitness trail.
Hiking trails around Kinnekulle
Kinnekulle offers hiking and cycling trails, as well as plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature. The Kinnekulleleden, also called the Kinnekulle vandringsled, is 48 kilometres long and rated as moderately difficult. The Biosfärleden passes through Källby on two named sections.
The Källby–Trolmen section starts at Källby station and ends in Trolmen on the Kinnekulle plateau. The Källby–Trolmen section has a fairly steep climb. The Råda kyrka–Källby section is 19 kilometres long and also ends at the station. The 19 kilometres refer to this Biosfärleden stage, not to the 48-kilometre Kinnekulleleden. The direction also matters for navigation: on Källby–Trolmen, you start at the station; on Råda kyrka–Källby, the station is the endpoint.
Church, archaeological sites and railway history
There are nine archaeological sites in total at Källby hallar. Källby kyrka dates from the latter part of the 12th century and was built of sandstone in the Romanesque style. The church houses a sculpture of the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child, carved from a single piece of oak in the 15th century. The sculpture therefore belongs to a later period than the church building.
The old railway keeper’s cottage next to Källby platform has been preserved; the station building has been demolished. Källby’s railway settlement illustrates how Swedish rural communities changed in connection with railway construction in the 20th century. The historic mill landscape at Sjökvarn dates back to the late 17th century. The history of the mills at Sjökvarn therefore goes back further than the changes to the railway settlement in the 20th century.
