Götene lies on the plain southeast of Kinnekulle. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, the interests behind your trip may help you decide: would you like to learn more about the town’s history, discover church art, or set aside time for trails in green surroundings? Götene brings these themes together in different ways.

History and the town’s development

The Götene museum provides information ranging from early Swedish history to the development of society in Götene. It is located on the ground floor of Centrumhuset. Its exhibits include photographs from the late 19th century, including pictures by Karl Johansson, as well as other images documenting Götene’s development and numerous objects from the former agricultural society.

The pictures and objects offer different ways to explore the town’s history: photographs capture scenes from the late 19th century, while the objects evoke the former agricultural society. Visitors who want to learn about Götene not only through its buildings but also through social change will find a dedicated focus on this at the museum.

Church, pilgrimage trail and Helena

Götene kyrka dates from 1125 and is one of Sweden’s oldest churches. From 1 October to 31 March, it is open to visitors daily from 09:00 to 16:00. If a visit to the church is part of your stay, check the opening hours for the day in question.

The pilgrimage and walking trail Sankta Elins led starts at the church. It runs via Ova, Varnhem and Våmb to Sankta Helenas kyrka in Skövde. The route therefore extends beyond Götene and connects several named places on the way to its destination.

In front of the church, Sankta Helenas rabatt features decorations and plantings inspired by the story of Saint Helena. Its design thus reflects a theme that also appears in a sculpture in the town: “Sankta Helena till häst” depicts Götene’s patron saint on her way to the consecration of Götene kyrka.

Sculptures and historic sites

The bronze sculpture “Sankta Helena till häst” stands in a park along Järnvägsgatan. Sculptor Martin Hansson created it in Husaby in 2022. Its depiction brings the saint’s story into Götene’s public space as a tangible motif.

Pomona, a monolith by Torsten Fridh in the park by the basin in Götene, has a different artistic effect. It is made of red Kinnekulle granite, while its symmetrical forms are made of sandstone. The contrast between the materials is a striking detail of the work. Götene Fornpark, next to Västerbybadet, adds another named place to the historical and artistic attractions.

Green spaces and trails in Götene

A leafy green area lies between Götene kyrka and Göteneån. From Badhusparken, a footpath follows Göteneån to Lindplanteringen and the allotment gardens, where there is a walking path.

A 1.2-kilometre forest walk with activities and information about the forest starts behind Folkets park in Götene. Brännaskogen also has a 2.5-kilometre running or training trail. The distances and the stated purposes give you a clear comparison: here, a forest walk with learning stations is set against a route for running or training.

The scenic 48-kilometre Kinnekulleleden is located in Götene Municipality. It lies inland in western Sweden on the southeast shore of Lake Vänern and is suitable for the whole family.

Families can also visit Solbackens lekplats in Götene, an adventure playground in a park for children of all ages. When planning, you can therefore choose between cultural themes, trails of different lengths and this playground, which is explicitly designated for all age groups.
