Säve: Equestrian Sports, Racetrack and Local History
Accommodation in Säve
Discover Säve through two distinct themes: equestrian sports at Göteborg Horse Park and local history around Säve kyrka and the Brunstorp burial ground. Göteborg Galopp adds its own focus on horse racing, while Aeroseum is dedicated to aviation history.
Equestrian sports at Göteborg Horse Park
Every year, Göteborg Hästsportklubb holds competitions and training sessions for ponies and horses at Göteborg Horse Park in Säve. The annual program also includes activities in many different disciplines. The outdoor arena measures 65 × 110 meters and has an adjacent warm-up arena. The oval track and pace track are also used for training and competitions.
If you want to ride yourself, the park offers several options: ride without booking in advance, book a single session, or reserve the arenas exclusively for up to four hours. The options range from a single session to an exclusive arena booking for a limited time.
Horse racing and guided tours
Göteborg Galopp racetrack is located on Sävefältet in Göteborg. All races take place on a large grass track with a circumference of just over 1,900 meters. There is also a sand track inside the grass track for training. Some steeplechases are held during the season from May to October; the season may change.
Göteborg Galopp offers guided tours. You can see horses up close as they start from the starting stalls, meet a jockey and possibly a racehorse trainer as well. Check the availability of tours before your trip. Outdoor activities also include picnics and children’s activities; the program may vary.
Church, burial ground and aviation history
Säve kyrka probably dates from the 13th century. It is a medieval parish church that was converted into a hall church in the 18th century. The ceiling paintings were created in two phases: in 1704, Christian Schönfeldt painted the barrel vault in the older part of the church. This distinguishes its tentatively dated medieval origins from the later renovation and the precisely dated phase of painting.
The Brunstorp burial ground lies on the hill opposite and slightly west of Säve’s old railway station building, on Högagårdsvägen in northern Hisingen. Several large and small burial mounds are located there. A small path leads from Högagårdsvägen, to the right of a light beige telecommunications building, up the hill to the burial ground.
Nature is also part of Brunstorp’s character: ängsvädd grows in abundance there, attracting many different butterfly species in late summer. The species present vary from year to year.
The cultural history museum Aeroseum presents the history and development of aviation, from Icarus to modern aircraft, helicopters and other flying machines. Its scope thus extends from Icarus to the various forms of modern aviation.
