When looking for a hotel in Gothenburg, it’s worth first deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: museums and design, hiking trails, or the coast and archipelago. Gothenburg brings together all these different themes. The city has 17 nature reserves, which serve to protect valuable natural areas in the long term and provide opportunities for outdoor recreation. The landscape ranges from coast and forests to mountains, lakes, valleys and farmland. You can therefore plan your trip around culture or nature—or include both interests.

Museums and culture in Gothenburg

The Gothenburg City Museum is located in the East India House, a building dating from the 1750s. The collection at the Gothenburg Museum of Art spans a broad period, from the 15th century to the present day, with a focus on Nordic art. The collection is presented through museum displays, temporary exhibitions and educational programs.

The Röhsska Museum opened in 1916 and is Sweden’s only specialist museum for design and crafts. Its permanent and temporary exhibitions showcase historical and contemporary design and crafts. Guided tours, lectures and creative workshops complement the program. If you’re particularly interested in design, you’ll find both historical and contemporary subjects under one roof.

Kulturnatta has been held in Gothenburg for more than 30 years. If you’d like to plan your trip around this cultural event, check the current event dates. The rainforest at Universeum also offers a distinctive way to explore nature: it is an educational setting featuring species involved in conservation programs. At the Gothenburg Rosarium, species roses are cared for and renewed by the Gothenburg local chapter of the Swedish Rose Society.

Hiking trails and nature experiences

The hiking trails vary in length and route. Gotaleden connects Gothenburg and Alingsås over 99 kilometers. Its first stage begins in central Gothenburg and passes through the Delsjön nature reserve. The historic Pilgrimsleden Göta Älv is 120 kilometers long and follows the Göta älv river. The Gothenburg Signature Trail consists of six selected stages of the southern Bohusleden and runs along the outskirts of Gothenburg. Bohusleden is one of the best-known hiking trails in the Gothenburg area and covers a wider region spanning several municipalities.

For a walk through the garden, you can use the Botaniska app for self-guided tours at the Gothenburg Botanical Garden. As app features may change, check the latest information before your visit. The different trail descriptions can help with planning: for Gotaleden, the length, connection between two places and route of the first stage are described; for Pilgrimsleden, the focus is on its total length and connection to the river. The Signature Trail, by contrast, is defined by six selected stages of the southern Bohusleden.

Archipelago and seasonal attractions

The Gothenburg archipelago has beaches, nature reserves and walking trails, and is a short trip from central Gothenburg. Activities available there include seal safaris, fishing trips, swimming and boat excursions. The southern islands can be reached via the Saltholmen or Stenpiren ferry terminals. If you’re planning to visit these islands, check the ferry timetable in advance.

Liseberg amusement park opens for three seasons: summer, Halloween and Christmas. Check the current opening dates before your visit. Whether you’re focusing on culture, trails through natural landscapes or the archipelago, these different options offer practical starting points for planning your stay in Gothenburg.
