Edsele lies in western Ångermanland on the Faxälven. Local history, outdoor trails and landscapes give your stay different points of focus. Edsele Church and the local history museum offer a glimpse into the past, while Bybergsleden, running and training trails, and viewpoints provide other ways to explore. When planning your trip, you can choose between cultural history, a climb, running training, and swimming or water skiing.

Church and local history

Edsele Church was built in 1799 by Pål Persson of Stugun, a church builder from Jämtland. The pulpit dates from the late 17th century and was made by Jon Snickare in Härnösand. The church also contains a fragmentary figure of Christ from the 12th century, which probably belonged to a processional cross or a triumphal crucifix. The furnishings therefore date back considerably further than the church building itself. Edsele Church is listed as open for services and concerts, as well as from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday in summer, during weeks 26 to 32. Before visiting, check whether these hours apply on your chosen date.

Local history museum

Edsele local history museum consists of a parstuga dating from 1836, relocated from Fjällbohög. Compared with the church, built in 1799, the house dates from just 37 years later; meanwhile, the church furnishings go back to the 12th and late 17th centuries. Here, two buildings of a similar period stand alongside objects from much earlier centuries, offering a perspective on local history.

Trails and activities

Bybergsleden leads to a summit on Byberget, at an elevation of 318 metres above sea level. The climb is about 1.5 kilometres long and steep in places; ropes are provided for support at some points. Parking is available near the start of Bybergsleden in Edsele. The distance, gradient and ropes give you practical points of reference when deciding whether to include this climb in your trip.

Edsele also has a 2.5-kilometre illuminated running and training trail, as well as a 5-kilometre route. Lighting is specifically mentioned for the shorter trail; the longer route is clearly identified by its distance. There is a wind shelter and barbecue area beyond the running and training trail in Edsele.

Landscape and views

Edsele has viewpoints offering wide-ranging views across the landscape. Gideåbergsmyrarna lie on a gentle slope that descends towards the Faxälven valley. These offer contrasting landscape features: expansive views from the viewpoints and the specific hillside setting of Gideåbergsmyrarna.

Swimming area and water skiing

Rammsjön bathing beach has a sandy shore, a bathing jetty, a diving tower in the water and a barbecue area. Edsele Vattenskidklubb is also based at the beach, where you can try water skiing several days a week. Swimming facilities and water skiing are different activities available at the same named location. Check the participation requirements for water skiing before you travel.

When looking for a hotel for your trip to Edsele, consider whether the church and museum, the climb up Byberget, the running trails or water skiing are your main priorities. This will help you decide what to focus on during your stay based on specific interests.
