Sollefteå Between River History and Winter Sports
Accommodation in Sollefteå
The Ångermanälven River has shaped Sollefteå’s history and landscape. Here, a landscape formed by the river meets cultural attractions in the town and sporting opportunities at Hallstaberget. Nearby, you’ll also find notable destinations such as Nämforsen in Näsåker.
River Landscape and Town History
The Nip landscape was formed after the inland ice melted and the Ångermanälven and Faxälven rivers repeatedly changed their courses. This created steep sandy slopes and the flat land between them. For several centuries, Sollefteå was a central hub and a marketplace and trading centre for goods transported along the river. From the 1870s onwards, the town developed, with grand buildings constructed mainly in wooden architectural styles.
The Nipleden hiking trail starts at Sollefteå Camping on Risön, in the centre of Sollefteå. It follows the Ångermanälven upstream to Edsbron, then returns downstream to the starting point after crossing the river.
