Trails, forests and natural landscapes

Sundsbergs friluftsområde is close to the center of Sunne and offers hiking trails and nature paths. In winter, there are illuminated cross-country ski trails and a sledding hill. The Sundsbergsleden starts at Sundsbergets friluftsområde and runs through a forest of large-trunked aspens and a herb-rich stream valley; along the way, it passes Torp Skogsbacken. Sundsberg therefore offers nature paths and a described hiking route alongside its winter activities.

Other protected areas nearby showcase different landscapes. Gettjärnsklätten is a hyperite mountain with far-reaching views, as well as interesting flora and insect life. Kalvhöjden preserves an old-fashioned, traditionally managed cultural landscape in Finnbygden, with a rich variety of flora. Tiskaretjärn Nature Reserve also maintains a traditional cultural landscape with a living culture and traditional land management.

Lake Björken is a bird-rich wetland with an observation tower, hiking trails, and picnic and barbecue areas. Sånebyklätten offers a different type of landscape: its gravel formation was created by meltwater. A marked trail runs through the reserve for approximately 400 plus 300 meters. If you want to combine nature and culture on one route, the Ängenleden near Sunne is an option. It runs around Ängsjön and offers nature and cultural experiences. Along the route are the old arched stone bridge “Putrale” and sections of Kyrkvägen, dating from the period of Finnish settlement in the 17th century.

Cultural sites and gardens

Near Sunne, Mårbacka is preserved as a memorial estate and is open to the public for guided tours. The grounds include a park, gardens, a historic setting, exhibitions and outdoor activities; these areas are accessible with a grounds ticket. Rottneros Park offers a different focus: this flower and sculpture park features themed gardens and around 100 sculptures and reliefs. At the entrance, there is a café serving light meals, ice cream and fika.

Sunne’s attractions also include the Alma Löv Museum of Unexp Art. The open-air museum of Sunne, which includes a school museum, is on the outskirts of town. Teaterbiografen is one of Sweden’s oldest cinemas still showing films. These attractions offer culture lovers a variety of options, from the memorial estate and its guided tours to gardens, exhibitions, cinemas and museums.

Activities in every season

Sunne Ski & Bike offers ski slopes for the whole family; in summer, the slopes are used for downhill biking. Sunne Sommarland has almost 20 different attractions, including water slides and a Wipeout course in Lake Fryken. Right on Fryken, in the center of Sunne, Mejeriängen offers a pump track, a children’s playground and barbecue areas. Sunne also has an 18-hole golf course right next to the Stamfrändemonument on the E45.

Getting there and local character

Sunne can be reached by train, bus or car. The Fryksdalsbanan takes travelers to Sunne by train and is considered one of Sweden’s most scenic railway lines. A walking and cycling path connects Sunne with Berättarladan. At Nytorget in the center, there is a 24-hour parking area for motorhomes.

The local food scene also offers a variety of places to visit: Sunne’s dining options include cafés by Fryken, local bakeries and restaurants serving Värmland flavors and ingredients from the region. Nearby, the historic mill in Stöpafors produces skrädmjöl.
