Discover Vålberg
Accommodation in Vålberg
Nature and industrial history offer two distinct ways to experience Vålberg during a stay. Bålberget, the Norsälven canoe route and the forest of Gökhöjden are all about nature and outdoor activities; the Svenska Rayon Museum and the buildings in Älvängen turn the focus to local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Vålberg, you can consider which experiences you want to shape your trip: hiking and canoeing, or architecture and industrial history.
Nature between trail and water
Bålberget is a wooded hill in Älvenäs, Vålberg. The hiking trail on the hill is 2 km long and has a barbecue area. This gives you both a specific trail length and a place to take a break along the way.
The Norsälven canoe route is 10.2 km long and has several landing places along the way. Älvenäsparken on the Norsälven canoe route has a landing place and a barbecue area. Side by side, the 2 km hiking trail on Bålberget and the 10.2 km water route offer two different ways to experience the landscape. The route length and landing places give the canoe route a different scale from the hiking trail.
The forest of Gökhöjden is a varied, mature pine forest on a mountain covered with lichens and moss. Here, the character of the forest takes centre stage, whereas Bålberget is described in terms of a specific hiking trail. If you are weighing up nature-focused options for your stay, you will find different highlights: the trail and barbecue area at Bålberget, landing places along the canoe route, or the mature pine forest of Gökhöjden.
Industrial history and architecture
The Svenska Rayon Museum presents the industrial history of rayon production at Svenska Rayon, as well as the rapid growth of Vålberg and Norsbygden in the post-war period. Its historical account begins in 1941: blockades during the Second World War brought Sweden's textile industry to a standstill because of material shortages. This places a specific wartime turning point alongside the later growth as two chronological milestones. This sequence presents industrial history as a development spanning several phases, rather than reducing it to rayon production alone.
The museum can arrange film and storytelling evenings, as well as group visits, on request. If you would like to plan one of these options, arrange the event you want before your trip.
The residential buildings in Älvängen add an architectural perspective to the industrial history. The layout of the terraced housing area has been well preserved since it was built. It was designed in connection with the establishment of Svenska Rayon's viscose industry and Kooperativa Förbundet. The former director's villa and the staff villas were also built under the direction of Svenska Rayon. Construction began in 1942, at the same time as the workers' housing in Älvängen. The terraced housing area and the villas can thus be understood as different parts of the same historical and industrial development.
The careful design of the rayon villas and the road layout is still clearly visible. The development is characterised by a clear architectural concept and the style ideals of the time. The road layout is therefore just as much a part of the architectural picture as the villas themselves.
