Segerstad – Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Segerstad
Segerstad brings together themes of nature and local history. Segerstads skärgård is a nature reserve and part of the Natura 2000 network. On the islands, wind-shaped pine forests, wetlands and open sandy beaches define the landscape. There are also hiking trails with different features, as well as traces of village life, archaeology and church history. During your stay, you can explore the natural environment, choose a trail and discover local history as separate points of interest.
Natural environment and access
The mainland area of Segerstads skärgård is accessible without a boat. The islands are characterised by pine forests, wetlands and open sandy beaches. If you are particularly interested in the landscape, these features offer specific topics to consider when planning: the wind-shaped forest, the wetlands and the open beach areas. The nature reserve and its status as part of the Natura 2000 network add to this nature-focused theme.
Hiking trails and navigation
The hiking trail to Arnäs udde is a gravel path and is suitable for wheelchairs. Arnäs udde is about 1.5 kilometres from the main car park and has a wind shelter. From there, a constructed boardwalk continues to Hamnholmarna. Hamnholmarna also has a wind shelter, as well as a wooden deck, a dry toilet and a fire pit.
You can also compare the hiking trail to Onsösundet and the Blue Loop by their approximate lengths. The trail to Onsösundet is about 1.5 kilometres long and runs mostly along an old track. The Blue Loop starts at the main car park and is about 2.5 kilometres long. The trails offer different points of reference: the route itself for the trail to Onsösundet, and the starting point and longer distance for the Blue Loop. The distances are approximate.
Cultural landscape and history
Segerstad’s cultural landscape contains four major concentrations of Bronze and Iron Age monuments near the shores of Lake Vänern and the farmland behind them. They are closely connected to Segerstad’s medieval old and new church villages. A total of four burial grounds with burial mounds and stone settings are also closely associated with Segerstad’s old church village. These places reveal different aspects of the archaeological past: major concentrations of monuments in the cultural landscape, as well as burial grounds near the old church village.
Segerstad’s undivided church village, with its linear village layout, has characteristic residential and farm buildings closely aligned with the village road. Segerstads kyrka also has a distinctive historical feature: its organ is considered to be of national interest because some of its pipes are very likely from the former organ of Karlstads domkyrka, dating from the 18th century.
Segerstad’s history includes boatbuilding carried out at certain times and the importance of fishing in Lake Vänern as a resource for households. Stora Axelön has four stone labyrinths. The cultural theme therefore includes evidence of village and church history, archaeological monuments, and the history of life on Lake Vänern.
