Väse combines a distinctive natural environment with a local history shaped by its church and railway. At Panken, the focus is on the shallow lowland lake, its meadows along the shore and seasonal birdwatching; Väse Church and its surroundings complement the natural environment with a distinctive cultural landscape. If you are looking for a hotel in Väse, you can tailor your stay to your specific interests: nature watching or architectural and local history.

Nature and Birdwatching at Panken

Panken is a shallow, nutrient-rich lowland lake surrounded by meadows along its shores. In spring, large flocks stop there, including waders, whooper swans, teal and greylag geese. From the bird tower, you can observe the birdlife in the meadows along Panken’s shores. The tower stands in a lovely pasture with old, gnarled pines. A hiking trail about 600 metres long leads from Väse Church to this bird tower southwest of the church.

The Glumman River flows into Panken; near Väse Church, the rare asp fish can be seen spawning in large numbers in April. The birds’ spring stopover and the asp’s spawning in April are two seasonal highlights for wildlife watching. The time of year can therefore shape the nature focus of your stay.

Church and Cultural Landscape

The area around Väse Church and Lake Panken is designated an area of national interest for nature conservation and heritage preservation. The preserved church surroundings include, among other things, a vicarage, a sexton’s farm, a local heritage farm and church stables; the local heritage farm formerly served as a courthouse and inn.

The present-day Väse Church was built from 1760 to 1762 to designs by Johan Eberhard Carlberg. The west tower dates from 1794, and the church is one of the largest stone churches in Värmland. The church village of Väse Church is an old parish centre; its settlement history can be traced with certainty back to the Iron Age. The runestone at Ve, also known as “Väsestenen” or “Rörstenen,” is one of the few known runestones in Värmland.

The history of the area’s culture also includes how the landscape has been used: the damp farmland along the shores of Vänern and Panken Bay have been used for livestock farming and grazing since prehistoric times.

Väse as a Railway Settlement

Väse is a railway settlement, and its historic built-up centre developed around the railway station. The station was inaugurated in 1869 and prompted growth in the surrounding area. The routes of Storgatan and Arnövägen still largely follow the alignments established during the railway’s construction and the settlement’s development.

The local history can thus be viewed in two distinct timeframes: the settlement history of the old parish centre reaches back to the Iron Age, while the railway station inaugurated in 1869 shaped Väse’s later growth.
