Skärholmen: Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Skärholmen
Skärholmen can be approached from several perspectives when planning a trip: nature and walking trails, architectural history, and cultural offerings for different age groups. This allows you to choose the focus of your stay according to your interests. Landscapes and trails, historical traces, and cultural institutions each offer their own way to explore the area.
Nature and trails
In Sätraskogen Nature Reserve, you can walk through open meadows, oak groves and old spruce forest. Skärholmsspåret also runs through the nature reserve. To get your bearings, it is useful to distinguish between the two: the protected area describes the landscape, while Skärholmsspåret is a named route through that area. Sätra friområde has its own historical date: it was established as a nature reserve in 2006.
Vårbergstoppen consists of two adjacent hills on the southwestern edge of the Skärholmen district. Vårbergstoppen Landscape Park is part of a large green area at the southern end of the district. Vårberg has viewpoints, birdwatching spots, an outdoor gym, and picnic areas with tables and barbecue facilities.
History and architecture
The present-day buildings at Skärholmens gård date from the 18th century. The farm offers various cultural activities, and there is also a café at Skärholmens gård. Nearby is a children’s trail with 34 stations. This brings together architectural history, cultural activities, and a trail with stations as distinct points of interest.
A few hundred metres east of Skärholmens gård, on a hill, is an ancient hillfort with surviving sections of wall. Near Västerholmsskolan in Skärholmen is a Viking Age burial ground. These two historical sites differ both in their classification and location: the burial ground is by the school, while the hillfort is east of the farm.
Skärholmen Church was inaugurated in 1976. The brick building is square-shaped, with an open courtyard. The church is K-marked and belongs to the green category, the second-highest level. Its architectural form and classification offer a different perspective on the area’s history from the hillfort, the burial ground, or the farm buildings.
Cultural offerings for different age groups
SKHLM Konsthall is a venue for contemporary art, where this art form and local life in SKHLM come together. Kulturhuset Stadsteatern Skärholmen is an open meeting place for art and culture, with theatre, cinema, a creative workshop, a gallery, and activities for young people. Its stage programme includes classics and newly written plays for children and young people aged five to 19.
Stationen is a free cultural and leisure centre for young people aged 13 to 19. Comparing the age ranges reveals a difference: the stage programme includes children and young people from the age of five, while Stationen is for the 13-to-19 age group. Parkleken Kulan offers a different focus: it is free to access, open to all age groups, and only a short walk from Sätra centrum.
If you are looking for a hotel in Skärholmen, you can first decide whether nature trails, architectural history, or cultural offerings should be the focus of your stay. If stage or event offerings are part of your plans, check the dates before you travel.
