Svartsjö: Castle History and Birdwatching
Accommodation in Svartsjö
Svartsjö brings together the history of Svartsjö Castle, walks in the castle park, and nature watching at Svartsjö dam and Svartsjöviken. Other attractions include the Färentuna courthouse, trails of varying lengths, and activities related to history and food. When planning your trip, you can weigh up whether castle history, time outdoors or birdwatching should take priority.
The castle and historical traces
Svartsjö Castle was built in the 1730s as a pleasure and hunting palace for Queen Ulrika Eleonora and was completed in 1739. The castle helped shape Swedish manor-house architecture in the 18th century. Its construction and later use form different chapters in its history: after 75 years as an institution, the castle closed in 1966. A reconstructed prison cell recalls this institutional past.
The museum at Svartsjö Castle displays furniture and inventory items from the collection of Lars Sjöberg. Guided tours cover both the castle’s history as a royal hunting palace and its time as a prison. When planning, you can choose between a look at the architecture and a deeper exploration of the castle’s different uses.
Another historical stop is the Färentuna courthouse in Svartsjö, about one kilometre east of Svartsjö Castle. Built in 1769 as an inn, it served as a courthouse until 1906. Its history complements the castle’s with a different function and its own timeline.
The castle park and nature watching
Svartsjö Castle Park covers 285,635 m². Its features include spacious lawns and gravel paths, as well as a carp pond and a leafy bower. You can go for walks and picnics in the park. It is intended for visitors; seasonal conditions may vary. Check current access arrangements before your visit.
You may be able to spot the protected great crested newt in the old carp pond. Hereford cattle graze on the grounds of Svartsjö Royal Estate and the waterside meadows at Svartsjöviken. These experiences differ from birdwatching at Svartsjö dam, where bodies of water, fields and different types of woodland support a diverse birdlife. Birds spotted here include the black-tailed godwit, sharp-tailed sandpiper, garganey and tufted duck.
Trails and getting there
A hiking trail about 6 km long runs around Svartsjöviken, with rest stops along the way. The birdwatching tower at Svartsjöviken can be reached via a 1.5 km walking route from the car park by the castle. These directions describe different options: a longer route around the bay and a walking route to the tower. Trail details may change; check them before setting out.
Svartsjöviken is accessible by bus from Brommaplan, with a change in Svanhagen. As bus routes may change, check the current route before travelling. This lets you plan your journey separately from deciding whether to include a stroll, a hike or a walk to the birdwatching tower in your day.
History and food to enjoy during your visit
Lovisa Ulrika’s Coffee House serves its own coffee blend with a hint of cardamom. Lunch options include smørrebrød and a castle soup that changes weekly. If you have a particular lunch option in mind, check the current menu.
The Historical Bookshop specialises in history books and regularly hosts historical author evenings and lectures at Svartsjö Castle. Individual dates may vary; check the events calendar if you want to plan around a particular event.
