Open agricultural landscapes surround Smedstorp. In the village, the traces of a station settlement meet older church art and a historic townscape. Trails in the surrounding area and seasonal leisure activities also offer different reasons to visit.

Townscape and Station History

Smedstorp preserves characteristic features of a station settlement from around the turn of the century. A historic settlement pattern remains along the old main streets in the centre. The station building is a red-brick structure dating from 1908 to 1910. The church and manor house lie north of the station area; beyond them begins a varied cultural landscape bearing clear traces of older agriculture. Taken together, these features show the connection between station history, historic buildings and the surrounding agricultural landscape.

Church and Cultural Heritage

Smedstorp Church was built in 1867 on the site of the former church. It contains a pulpit dating from 1597. The Bingska gravmonument is unique in its design in SkÄne. The dates reveal different historical layers: the church building dates from the 19th century, while the 16th-century pulpit has been preserved. The history of the area also includes Smedstorp Manor, which belonged to the Danish Bing family from the 14th century onward.

Craftspeople, artists and galleries are also part of village life. Artistic activity in Smedstorp is particularly high during the Easter Art Round. If you are considering visiting during this period, check the dates and participating venues for your travel year.

GÄrdlösaleden and Trails in Smedstorp

The twelve-kilometre GĂ„rdlösaleden passes archaeological remains such as ship settings and stone circles. The route’s start and finish in Smedstorp are accessible by train, car or bicycle. Maps are available from the information board next to the station or at the old grocery store right beside it. As local distribution points may change, it is worth checking before setting out; if travelling by train, check the current timetable.

A shorter option is Smedstorps motionsspÄr: a 3.5-kilometre, accessibility-adapted exercise loop. It starts at the sports ground and runs west of the village, partly through woodland. The route is suitable for running and walking, and benches are placed along the entire loop. The two trails differ in both length and character: GÄrdlösaleden combines a longer route with archaeological remains, while the motionsspÄr is designed as an exercise loop.

Nature and Culture in the Wider Region

In the wider region around Smedstorp, ListarumsĂ„sen is a wooded moraine ridge on the open plain north of the village. This hundred-year-old woodland is dominated by oak and beech, and has two short circular walking trails. Also in the wider region, the LjungavĂ„ngen Nature Reserve protects rare and threatened amphibians, including one of Sweden’s largest populations of the common spadefoot toad. The frogs’ distinctive spring calls can be heard from a distance. The area has no facilities for outdoor recreation.

Another historical trace in the wider region is the runic inscription on a silver brooch from the grave of the Silver Girl. It dates from the 2nd century and is among Sweden’s oldest runic inscriptions. Note the access restrictions on the land around the grave: built-up or agricultural land may not be entered without the landowner’s permission.

Only the private main building of Smedstorp Castle remains today; it is not open to the public. If you are considering an interior visit, check access in advance.

Seasonal Leisure Activities

Smedstorps Friluftsbad has a 25-metre pool, a paddling pool and a water slide. The facility also has a twelve-hole mini-golf course; swimming lessons are offered in summer. As seasonal details and activities may change, check the latest information for your travel dates before visiting.
