Discover Skurup: Brick, Nature and Coastal Paths
Accommodation in Skurup
Red brick, a Romanesque church and paths through varied landscapes give Skurup its distinctive character. In the town centre, you’ll find traces of Sweden’s railway communities and distinctive brick architecture; across the municipality, nature experiences range from a hill near Skurup to beaches and coastal paths.
Brick Architecture and Local History
Skurup’s railway district is of national interest for cultural heritage preservation. It represents the railway communities of Scania around the turn of the 20th century. In the town centre, Skurup Gothic shapes the streetscape: this architectural style, built in red brick, is still recognisable today. Many buildings are made of machine-made red brick, alongside an altered grid plan. Together, the building material and street layout give the town centre its distinctive architectural character.
Another glimpse into local history is Skurup Church. It was originally built around the year 1200 in the form of a Romanesque basilica. Paintings can be found in the chancel and apse. The church and the railway district represent different historical layers: an early Romanesque architectural form on the one hand, and the later development of the railway communities on the other. For anyone interested in architecture, there is more than one building to explore.
Landscapes and Paths Around Skurup
The municipality’s landscape changes from south to north. It encompasses parts of Söderslätt, the rolling landscape of southern Scania and the southern slope of Romeleåsen. This progression makes the landscape an important part of finding your bearings: Skurup is shaped not only by its town centre, but also by the different landscape areas within the municipality.
North of Skurup, the Zimmermans backe nature reserve sits on a high hill. Its summit is about 25 metres above the town and offers views of the surrounding area. A variety of trees in the Bräknehus area support a diverse birdlife. A lit, mostly gravel loop, 2.5 kilometres long, runs around Bräknehus and Zimmermans backe. The hill, views and birdlife are all reasons to take your time exploring this part of the landscape.
For a shorter loop, there is a lit, paved route around Lake Prästamossen in the south-east of Skurup. It is 1.2 kilometres long and intended for pedestrians and cyclists. Compared with the mostly gravel 2.5-kilometre loop near Bräknehus, it is shorter and has a different surface; the two routes therefore offer different conditions for a walk.
Park, Forest and Coast
At Skurup City Park, park history meets mature vegetation. The park was created in 1927, largely based on a Danish garden design. Rhododendrons and old, mature trees define the park. The Svaneholm Vassen nature reserve, meanwhile, features old oak and beech forest and an accessible path around the lake. The municipality thus offers two distinct nature experiences: a landscaped park and a woodland landscape.
Along the coast, the 12-kilometre SkĂĄneleden trail runs between Mossbystrand and Bingsmarken. It follows the coastline, passing small fishing villages and picturesque harbours. Mossbystrand nature reserve has a sandy beach suitable for swimming; its dry-meadow flora includes pasqueflowers and wild thyme. The coastal trail and nature reserve bring together walking landscapes, small seaside villages and distinctive plant life.
Everyday Places to Explore
The municipality’s libraries are also useful landmarks: there are four locations, in Skurup, Abbekås, Rydsgård and Skivarp. You can borrow books, magazines and films there. Spaces are available for reading, studying or using a computer. The libraries are spread across several places in the municipality, adding an everyday dimension to the visitor experience alongside the excursion destinations.
Whether your trip focuses on local history, walks or coastal scenery, the places described here reveal different sides of Skurup without limiting you to just one. When planning a hotel stay, you can start by thinking about which of these interests will shape your trip.
