Vollsjö offers a range of ways to shape your stay: traces of Fritiof Nilsson Piraten, the history of the church, and various trails. For planning, it helps to consider literary connections and specific routes separately. This way, you can focus more on cultural history or on getting out and about.

The Pirate Museum and Literary Traces

Since 1998, the Pirate Museum has been housed in an old railway keeper’s cottage in Vollsjö. In the museum park stands the sculpture group “Saga väves på sanningens varp” featuring Piraten, Bombi Bitt, Eli and the cat Skorpan. The literary connection extends beyond these characters: in Fritiof Nilsson Piraten’s books, Vollsjö is also referred to as Tosterup, Grimsby and Gyllevad. Pumphuset is one of the places in Vollsjö known from Piraten’s books; it is within walking distance of the Pirate Museum. The literary traces are therefore spread across several named places and the sculpture group in the museum park.

The Church, History and Literary Connections

Vollsjö Church has a long history of construction. It was originally a chapel, dated to around the beginning of the 13th century; it may have been built as early as the end of the 12th century. These dates indicate a range of possible periods. Inside the church is a 16th-century Renaissance tombstone depicting an almost life-sized skeleton. The church also features in literary history: it appears in Fritiof Nilsson Piraten’s book “Bombi Bitt och jag” and the film adaptation of the same name. Another literary connection leads to Wollsjö säteri in Vollsjö: Piraten’s novel “Bock i örtagård” links the estate with Gottorp. The church’s construction history, the tombstone and the literary references therefore offer different themes through which to explore Vollsjö’s cultural history.

Walking Trails in Vollsjö

The Piraten walking trail through Vollsjö passes seven signs with QR codes. Before your trip, check whether the signs are still there. Säkra Slingan consists of two circular routes with a combined length of 7.6 kilometres. These details answer different planning questions: the Piraten walking trail has QR-code signs, while Säkra Slingan has a stated total length for its two circular routes. If you want to plan your trip around a cultural theme or a route with a specified distance, you can consider these details separately.

Local Development and Landscape

When the railway was built in 1866, Vollsjö’s station settlement developed north of the old village centre. It grew around the market square, about 500 metres from the railway station. This historical development distinguishes the older village centre from the later settlement that grew up around the square. Vollsjöån runs west of Vollsjö. The wider Fränninge-Vollsjö area has a hilly agricultural landscape, also traversed by Vollsjöån. Thus, the history of the area around the railway station and the landscape of the wider area represent two different geographical scales.
