Torna-Hällestad: Nature Trails and Village History
Accommodation in Torna-Hällestad
Torna-Hällestad combines outdoor trails with village history. The village lies about 15 km southeast of Lund, on the northeastern slope of Romeleåsen and at the transition to Vombsänkan.
Nature Trails and Hiking
Torna-Hällestad is home to the Kaninlandet nature reserve. It has walking and riding trails; the area was created by earlier gravel extraction and has sandy soil. The trails and the area’s former use give the reserve different dimensions: it is a place for outdoor activities and also a landscape with a specific history of use. Near Torna-Hällestad, the Skåneleden connects with other sections of the trail. Here, it runs across a network of eskers covered with pastures and beech forest.
The surrounding countryside also offers hiking trails, particularly in Skrylle and Trollskogen. The Skåneleden loop around Skrylle can be started in Torna Hällestad. It is about 17 km long and takes approximately four hours on foot. These figures provide an indication of the distance and time required for this particular loop; in Kaninlandet, the focus is on walking and riding trails.
Cycling and Former Rail Connections
Next to Tornavallen’s football pitch is a pump track open to all cyclists. If access conditions are important for your visit, check the information on site. Torna Hällestadsspåret is a shared cycling and walking path as well as a riding trail. It follows a former railway embankment, where trains and railbuses once ran between Dalby and Torna Hällestad. The route’s present-day use thus meets its former function as a rail connection.
Church and Village History
Hällestad kyrka in Torna-Hällestad was originally built in the 12th century from grey stone, with a nave and a square chancel. The nave contains medieval frescoes in eight vaulted sections. They depict the Passion and the work is dated to 1460. Three Hällestad runestones are built into the eastern section of the church wall. The church’s architecture, paintings and runestones thus offer different historical points of reference in one place.
Another landmark in the village is Stämmestenen, the old village stone. It is preserved in a central location in the village, near Hällestad kyrka. While the three runestones are located in the eastern church wall, the village stone has its own place in the village landscape.
Eating Locally
Torna Hällestad Lanthandel serves lunch, fika and other food. As the selection may change, check what is currently available in advance if you are planning to eat there. This lets you take nature trails, village history and a specific place to eat into account when choosing your stay.
