Åhus combines medieval urban history with coastal and sandy landscapes. The town has retained its character as a seaside and summer resort since the late 19th century. When looking for a hotel in Åhus, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your stay: would you like to explore its history, discover nature reserves and birdwatching, or explore the sandy surroundings and their history of use? The places and paths offer different perspectives on Åhus.

Medieval Åhus and its history

Åhus is one of Sweden’s best-preserved medieval towns. The Åhus Museum is housed in the medieval town hall, right next to Mariakyrkan on the market square. Its exhibition on the town’s history focuses on numerous archaeological finds and insights into life in medieval Åhus. The museum is closed for the 2026 season; reopening is planned for June 2027. Check this date again before your trip.

Aosehus also offers a glimpse into medieval history: the ruins recall a fortress built where the Helge å once flowed into the sea. Today, the castle ruins stand on a grassy hill, with the parking lot beside the quay. Aosehus can be reached by regional bus to Åhus, getting off at the Järnvägsgatan stop. Check the connection before travelling. Another historic remnant is Konventmuren, an 800-year-old relic of the former Dominican convent in Åhus.

Coastal nature reserves and the sandy landscape

The Äspet coastal nature reserve is near Åhus, just south of the Helge å’s northern mouth. There is a parking lot in the eastern part of the reserve, from which two birdwatching towers can be reached. Kronoskogen is another nature reserve in Åhus; it has a bird lagoon and an observation tower. The two places offer different focal points: Äspet centres on its two birdwatching towers, while Kronoskogen combines a lagoon and an observation tower.

Sånnarna refers to the sandy areas around Åhus, which people have used since at least the Bronze Age. The Sånnarna outdoor museum presents the surrounding cultural landscape with information and a demonstration planting. It illustrates the historical practice of shifting cultivation up to the mid-20th century. These two time references help distinguish the long-standing use of the sandy areas from the later agricultural tradition.

Walking and cycling routes

Sånnastigen is a signposted loop from Åhus to Sånnarna. It runs along Kavrövägen and Flötövägen and passes the golf course. Stora Vattenriketrundan offers a different route: travelling south from Kristianstad to Åhus, follow the Sydostleden signs. The routes differ mainly in how you travel and navigate: Sånnastigen leads to Sånnarna along named roads and past the golf course; the cycling route follows the Sydostleden signs on the section to Åhus.

More aspects of local life
