Sturefors – Castle Park, History and Cultural Landscape
Accommodation in Sturefors
If you’re looking for a hotel in Sturefors, you can plan your stay around your interests: the castle park and its architectural history, a cultural landscape of woodland and pasture, or historic traces around Vist Church. The places and information below will help you put these themes into context for your trip.
Castle Park and Architectural History
Most of Sturefors Castle Park is open to the public. The park covers 11 hectares and has four kilometres of paths laid out in the 18th century. You can take both the size of the park and the total length of its paths into account when planning your visit.
Part of a French-style garden has also been preserved in the castle park. It includes a reflecting pool, avenues and parterres—ornamentally designed garden plots. These features give the garden a distinctive character alongside the park paths.
Sturefors Castle was built in the first decade of the 18th century and was partly designed by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger. The ensemble of castle buildings and park was designated a listed building in 1976. Sturefors is a very well-preserved and active castle and estate complex. For those interested in cultural history, its architectural history, garden designs and protected ensemble offer different perspectives on the place.
Landscape, Paths and Water
Sturefors Nature Reserve encompasses open pastures, oak pastures and broadleaf woodland in an ancient cultural landscape. Vistkärret offers a different landscape: it is dominated by wild swamp forest and includes wide reed beds as well as grazed broadleaf woodland along the banks of the Stångån. You can compare open pasture and woodland with an area shaped more by swamp forest and reeds.
When considering path lengths, it helps to distinguish between the total distance and an individual loop: the castle park has four kilometres of paths in total, while the Rördromsstigen loop in Vistkärret is about 1.1 kilometres long. This loop is fully accessible. The figures therefore describe different things: the total length of the paths in the park and one individual loop. If you’d like to choose a walk based on a specific loop length, Rördromsstigen provides a clearly stated distance.
At the car park in Sturefors Nature Reserve, you can launch or take out canoes and kayaks. This also gives you a specific location to plan a paddling trip around.
History and Getting There
The southern part of Vist Cemetery dates back to the Middle Ages. The runestone was discovered beneath the floor of Vist Church during clean-up work after the 1961 fire. In October 1965, it was repaired and placed beside the newly built church. Vist Church also has a prominent tower near the Kinda Canal.
Another landmark is Sturefors Lock. It is located by Sturefors Castle, right on Lake Ärlången, and has a lift of 3.2 metres. The description of the area thus brings together the castle, the lake and a clearly identified technical landmark.
You can take a bus from Linköping to Sturefors and get off at the “Vist skola” stop. From there, you can continue by bicycle or walk along the road to the nature reserve. Check the bus timetable before your trip so you can plan your journey accordingly.
