Skedevi: Nature, Culture and History
Accommodation in Skedevi
When considering Skedevi as a travel destination, you can explore its landscape, archaeological features, settlement history and seasonal community offerings. The church on the shore of Lake Tisnaren and Prästängsudden Nature Reserve provide specific points of interest for exploring the landscape. Valleräng’s stone circle, the Husby burial ground and the hillfort at Kalehäll each offer their own historical highlights; the summer café, meanwhile, is open on Sunday afternoons in July.
Nature and Location on Lake Tisnaren
Skedevi Church is located on the shore of Lake Tisnaren. Prästängsudden Nature Reserve lies northeast of the church; the protected area is also by the lake. It includes one of the largest continuous areas of broadleaf forest in northern Östergötland. The forest adds a clearly defined landscape feature to the lakeside setting. The nature reserve is best reached by boat from Lake Tisnaren. If you include Prästängsudden in your plans, take this way of getting there into account.
Archaeological Features and History
Valleräng’s stone circle can be described using two measurements: it has a diameter of about 12 meters and consists of twelve large stones that are approximately 90 centimeters high. The measurements refer to different parts of the stone circle—the overall diameter and the height of the stones. This makes it easier to picture the size of the site without confusing the two figures.
The Husby burial ground consists of thirteen circular stone settings and two round burial mounds. Comparing the types and numbers makes the difference in quantity clear: there are thirteen stone settings and two burial mounds. Kalehäll has a few surviving remains of a hillfort. From there, you can enjoy a view over Lake Tisnaren.
Cultural Landscape and Settlement History
The Skedevi cultural environment offers a broader perspective than individual archaeological sites. It is shaped by an agricultural landscape with a parish center and village settlement areas. These areas show continuity of settlement and land use dating back to prehistoric times. The focus is therefore not on a single monument, but on the long continuity of settlement and use. This offers a different perspective from the measurements of individual sites or the surviving remains of a hillfort.
Church and Digital Tour
The church also offers a visual online tour. If you would like to use it to prepare for your visit, check in advance whether the linked material is available; availability may change. This lets you take the digital tour into account when planning your trip, without treating it as a substitute for an in-person visit.
Summer Café and Tours on Request
The Skedevi Local History Association’s annual summer café takes place on Sunday afternoons in July; visitors can view collected objects there. The association arranges tours of the local heritage farm on request. The two offerings require different kinds of planning: the summer café is seasonal, while a tour must be requested. If you have specific travel dates in mind, check the café dates; contact the association in advance to arrange a tour.
