Discover Koler

Koler is a typical railway settlement along the Norra stambanan. The town developed when the railway was built through Markbygden in the mid-1890s. This connection between the settlement’s origins and railway construction forms the historical starting point for the town’s history. The station and monument point to different aspects of this railway past; archaeological remains in the area date back much further. In addition, Kolerträsket as a designated swimming area and the winter daylight trails complement the historical context with specific local features.

Railway history and station

Koler station is part of a distinctive railway architecture. SJ’s own architects contributed to the design of this architecture. The station is therefore connected not only with the settlement’s origins, but also with its own architectural tradition. South of Koler, a monument commemorates the meeting of the railway construction crews in December 1894. The settlement developed in connection with railway construction in the mid-1890s; the monument refers to a specific event from that period. The focus at the station is on architecture, while the monument commemorates the construction workers.

Settlement history

There are numerous archaeological remains in the Koler area; people have lived there since the Stone Age. This timeline extends far beyond the origins of the railway settlement in the 19th century. The geographical distinction is also important for understanding the history: the remains relate to the Koler area, whereas Koler as a railway settlement developed in the mid-1890s. Thus, the area’s long history of settlement and the more recent history of the settlement exist side by side.

Swimming area and pitches

Kolerträsket is a designated swimming area in Piteå Municipality and is run by the Koler Intresseförening. Its specific name and operator give you a clear point of reference for a visit to the water. The Koler Intresseförening also rents out four pitches right by the beach. Seasonal activities in Koler and Markbygden

In winter, there are daylight trails in Koler. Before your trip, check whether the seasonal trails are available during your visit. In the wider Markbygden travel area, there are good fishing opportunities in the summer half of the year; check local conditions before your trip. In winter, there are snowmobile trails there, including routes to Långträsk and Storsund. There is also a wood-fired sauna at a bathing beach in Markbygden.

Two distinctions are useful when planning: Koler is the point of reference for the swimming area and daylight trails; the fishing opportunities, snowmobile trails and sauna are associated with the wider Markbygden area. In terms of season, the daylight trails and snowmobile trails are for winter, while the fishing opportunities are available during the summer half of the year.
