Piteå brings together coastal scenery, a city setting and a location on the archipelago. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of interests: city history and museums, paths along the canal, cultural events, as well as nature trails and boat tours. If you’re looking for a hotel in Piteå, you can start by considering whether you’d like to focus mainly on urban culture, routes by the water or the archipelago.

History and Museums

A turning point in the city’s history was the fire of 1666, which destroyed Öjebyn. The city was moved to the island of Häggholmen the following year, in 1667. Piteå Church is the oldest wooden church in Upper Norrland. Inside, it features a richly decorated Renaissance altarpiece from the 17th century. Tours of the church can be booked.

The Piteå Museum is housed in the former town hall at Rådhustorget in the city centre. As a cultural history museum for the Piteå region, it presents exhibitions on the present day and the past, and holds collections of objects and photographs. The museum also organises guided city walks.

The Piteå Boat Museum brings together a variety of maritime themes. On display are old wooden boats, boat engines and fishing equipment. The exhibitions also cover maritime life, industry, labyrinths, fishing and seal hunting. Collections relating to boats and fishing are presented alongside other themes from the region’s cultural history.

Walking Routes and Park Life in the City Centre

The Park Promenade runs along the Strömsund Canal between Piteå’s north and south harbours. It offers a clearly defined route for a city walk along the canal between these two harbour areas. Badhusparken, Piteå’s largest park, is also located by the canal in the city centre. It is home to the NPNP Demonstration Park, with winding paths and planted areas.

During the summer months, flea markets, auctions and park evenings take place in Badhusparken. These events are seasonal, so if you’d like to include them in your trip plans, keep the summer months in mind. The promenade and park areas also offer their own ways to explore the cityscape.

Archipelago and Nature Trails

Piteå’s archipelago includes historic landscapes with ancient monuments and distinctive flora. Boat tours in the archipelago include seal safaris and sightseeing cruises. These tours cater to two different interests: wildlife watching on seal safaris and sightseeing cruises.

Fårön is near Piteå, about four kilometres from the city centre. It has nature trails and rest areas. The first 300 metres of the nature trail are equipped with wide wooden boardwalks suitable for wheelchair users, pushchairs and walkers. When planning your route, note that this accessibility applies to the section specified.

Cultural Life and Local Cuisine

Studio Acusticum hosts concerts, performances, stand-up comedy, dance and film screenings throughout the year. It is also home to the Acusticum organ, considered the largest concert hall organ in the Nordic region. Its year-round programme therefore differs from the events at Badhusparken, which are limited to the summer months.

Local food culture is also part of Piteå’s character: Pitepalt is considered Piteå’s national dish and plays a central role in the local cuisine. Together with the museums, the church and the events programme, it contributes to a cultural offering that extends beyond individual sights.
