Altersbruk combines industrial history with opportunities to experience the landscape on foot and on the water. This gives you different aspects to consider when planning your trip: traces of the former ironworks, circular trails in Alterdalen and activities on the Alterälven. When choosing a destination for cultural history and outdoor activity, you can decide which of these matters most to you: historical context, a specific hiking route or water activities.

Traces of the Ironworks’ History

Alters Bruk in Nybyn was founded at the Alterlänningen boat landing, also known as Alterheden. At Lassbacken, a mill, several outbuildings and residential buildings from Altersbruk’s operating period have been preserved. The different types of buildings bring the site’s former operations to life as more than just a production story: the surviving structures include outbuildings and homes as well as the mill.

Iron was produced at Alters Bruk until 1890. The present-day millpond in Nybyn has been in operation since 1838 and is considered Norrbotten’s oldest millpond still in operation. The historical period of production and the millpond that remains in operation mark different phases in the area’s history.

Hiking in Alterdalen

The orange section of the Solanderleden forms a loop from Altersbruk through Alterdalen. The southern route is 15 km long and the northern one is 17 km. The southern loop is therefore two kilometres shorter; it passes through forests and cultivated land and crosses the Alterälven twice. You can compare the loops by distance and also get a sense of the southern route from its described landscape.

Nature is also part of the valley’s character: Alterdalen is known for its rich variety of animal and bird life. When choosing between the loops, you can consider the stated distances alongside the description of the southern route. Trail conditions may change, so check them before your hike.

Paddling and Other Activities

The Alterälven offers paddling opportunities at different levels of difficulty. When choosing a route, take into account both its difficulty level and seasonal changes in water conditions. The river’s difficulty and its conditions are separate factors that may affect your plans.

AlterHedens offers a guided Rabarbersafari, travelling by tractor and wagon through the forest to the rhubarb fields. Another activity is a seasonal demonstration of how to bake gáhkku, a Sámi flatbread cooked on embers. If you are interested in Sámi food culture, this offers a specific theme for your stay.

At AlterHedens’ Rabarberbio, a small screening room shows a video tour of AlterHedens Gårdsbutik & Rabarberi. The film and demonstration thus add two more formats to the guided ride to the rhubarb fields. Be sure to factor the seasonal dates of the demonstrations into your travel plans.

Accessibility at Bruksbadet

At Bruksbadet, beside the old mill in Altersbruk, wheelchair users can get around easily at both the kiosk and the pier. If access to these areas is important to your plans, confirm the conditions before your visit.
