Ájtte gives Jokkmokk a distinctive cultural focus: the museum is Sweden’s principal museum of Sámi culture and a specialist museum for the nature and culture of the mountain region. Its exhibitions range from Sámi life and culture to the relationship between people and nature. As an important source of information about the mountain region, Ájtte also invites you to consider culture and landscape together.

Culture and history in Jokkmokk

Jokkmokk’s church history encompasses several distinct chapters. The first church in Jokkmokk was built in 1607. Jokkmokks Gamla Kyrka was built in 1753, burned down in 1972 and rebuilt in 1976. Its interior color scheme is inspired by the Sámi kåta. Jokkmokks Kyrka was inaugurated in 1889 and has been the parish’s main church ever since. It was designed by architect Ernst Abraham Jacobsson; the monumental paintings Uvssat Davás / Dörrarna västerut were created by Lars Pirak, Bengt Lindström and Lars J:son Nutti. In different ways, the paintings refer to life in northern Sweden.

You can also encounter Sámi art in the Samiska Skulpturparken on the eastern shore of Talvatissjön. A selection of works by Sámi artists is on display there; a stroll through the park brings culture and nature together. In the center of Jokkmokk, Arctic Stories presents joik and storytelling performances in a låvdågoahte, a Sámi dwelling. At Kulturhuset Gamla Apoteket, local artisans and artists sell their work and hold exhibitions. Jokkmokks Tenn offers a further glimpse of handicrafts and design in the Sámi tradition.

The market and recurring events

Jokkmokks Marknad has continued as an unbroken tradition for more than 400 years. The market features local food and trading both outdoors and indoors. Events include reindeer races, art exhibitions, snowmobile and dog-sled tours, concerts and lectures. The program also includes seminars, theater and other local events; individual editions may vary. The market thus offers different ways to experience Jokkmokk’s culture, from performances and exhibitions to food and trade. If you are interested in a particular program feature, check the dates and program for the edition you plan to visit.

Trails and nature at Talvatis

At Talvatis, you’ll find several trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels. The loop closest to the lake is 2.3 kilometers long, partly has wooden boardwalks and is accessible to wheelchairs and strollers. Seasonal conditions may affect the surfaces. There are also several barbecue areas in the area. The Mineralstigen runs along the eastern shore of Talvatis, between the bathing beach and the dam by the mountain botanical garden. Along the way, you can learn about minerals found in Jokkmokk Municipality; the trail also includes a stone labyrinth.

Fjällträdgården is a green oasis beside the rushing Kvarnbäcken. Landscaped walking paths let you explore the garden and learn more about mountain nature and flora. It is also home to a reconstructed mountain hut, commissioned in Sarek more than a hundred years ago by the pioneer of mountain research, Axel Hamberg. The garden combines a stroll with botanical learning and a glimpse into the history of mountain research.

For longer hikes, Getberget has several trails ranging from 1.6 kilometers to about 10 kilometers. From the summit, you can enjoy sweeping views of the surrounding area. Another, longer option is the 7.7-kilometer hiking route from Skabramsjön via Talvatissjön to the Lule River at Notudden. Along the route, 20 information boards describe local nature and culture. The different trail lengths give you a clear way to distinguish a walk at Talvatis from a longer hike.

More excursions and getting there

In winter, there is a 10.2-kilometer ski trail, consisting of a lit 5-kilometer loop and three easy-to-ski loops that branch off from it and rejoin it. Grooming and lighting conditions may change; check conditions if you plan to use the trail. Jokkmokkguiderna offers canoe and kayak rentals, as well as guided multi-day canoe and packraft tours, hikes and wildlife safaris. There are also trails and paths for hiking and cycling around Jokkmokk.

The nearest station on the Inlandsbanan railway is Murjek; the bus journey from there to Jokkmokk takes about an hour. Check timetables before you travel. When planning your hotel stay, the museum, cultural and nature offerings can help you organize your interests for your time in Jokkmokk.
