Vuollerim: Nature and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Vuollerim
Vuollerim combines distinctive natural features with a long history. At the Eco Park, highlights range from river ravines and sites where rare fungi grow to traces of archaeological settlements. Historic buildings, local businesses and events round out the picture, offering different focal points for planning your trip.
Nature and River Landscapes
Vuollerim Eco Park lies at the confluence of the Stora Luleälven and Lilla Luleälven rivers. Rare fungi such as the Goliatmusseron, Smultronkantarell and Taigataggsvamp grow in its sun-exposed lichen heaths. The Vuollerimravinerna nature reserve offers a different landscape: varied woodland on the steep slopes of the Luleälven, cut through by deep stream ravines. Thus, the Eco Park focuses on lichen heaths and fungi, while Vuollerimravinerna is characterized primarily by woodland and ravines.
Tussilagolunden adds a distinctive plant habitat to these natural highlights. The deciduous forest ravine is in Vuollerim; the rare coltsfoot grows there, unusual in the inland areas of Upper Norrland. Tussilagolunden is signposted from the Porsi power station, and there is a car park nearby. A boardwalk and signs lead to the plant’s location. If you plan to visit this spot, you’ll have a named starting point and directions to the plant.
Hiking Trails and Places to Visit
All hiking trails in Vuollerim start at the northern end of Gästgivarestigen. A municipal visitor guide from 2025 lists five trails of varying difficulty: the shortest is 2 kilometres long, and the longest is just over 4 kilometres. These figures give you an idea of trail length; you should also consider the difficulty when choosing a route. Check the trail information locally for updates.
Spegeldammen serves a special purpose: it was built to prevent water levels next to Vuollerim from falling. A municipal travel guide from 2025 describes Spegeldammen as a popular place to visit on warm summer days. This description applies to the warmer months, adding a destination associated both with water levels and summer outings to the area’s natural highlights.
History and Culture
Gamla Telegrafen tells the story of the local area through a building with a clearly defined former purpose. The single-storey wooden house was built in 1904 as a telephone exchange and residence. It is considered a well-preserved building from around the turn of the century and an important link in Vuollerim’s history. Objects and photographs from different eras have been collected at Gamla Telegrafen. To visit the museum there, you can contact the Vuollerim local heritage association.
The church in Vuollerim can also be placed in its historical context: it was consecrated in 1958. The church houses the altarpiece “Livets väg” by Lennart Segerstråle. The archaeological traces at the Eco Park reach much further back in time. There are excavation sites of settlements where people lived 6,000 years ago. A boardwalk leads to the excavation site, and several signs provide information about the archaeological discoveries in the area.
