Gällivare can be explored in different ways: at the alpine summit of Dundret, on trails along the Vassaraälven, and through exhibitions about the region’s history. Mining and Sámi culture are also part of the local story.

Dundret: Alpine Nature and Panoramic Views

The summit of Dundret is 820 metres above sea level. There, you can experience the plants and animals of the alpine environment. On a clear day, the view extends to the Kebnekaise massif and across one eleventh of Sweden’s area. Hiking trails, ski trails and a snowmobile route offer different ways to explore the landscape. Dundret also has shelters, toilets and rest huts; individual facilities may change. Alpine skiing is also available. Check operating hours before your trip.

In summer, the easiest accessible route to Toppstugan can be used with a pushchair, bicycle or wheelchair. The surface and seasonal access may vary. You can plan your visit to Dundret according to the route and current conditions, without assuming that the summit views mean the route will meet everyone’s needs.

Culture, Churches and Mining History

Gällivare Cultural Museum offers guided tours of changing and permanent exhibitions, as well as workshops for preschool, primary school and upper secondary school. Specific programmes may vary. The museum presents the municipality’s history, focusing on Sámi people, settlers, the mining industry and nature. It therefore provides an introduction to several themes that have shaped Gällivare, rather than limiting the town’s history to mining.

Gällivare gamla kyrka, also known as Ettöreskyrkan, stands by the Vassaraälven and is Gällivare’s oldest church. Malmberget offers a different perspective on mining history: large-scale industrial mining has been carried out there for more than 100 years. As a result, large parts of the town are currently being abandoned or relocated. The town’s ongoing transformation is itself part of the region’s history.

Laponia: Landscape and Lived History

At the Laponia Visitor Centre Jiellevárre/Gällivare, an exhibition features parts of Muddus/Muttos National Park and the Sjávnja and Stubbá nature reserves. It explains how people have lived in the region for thousands of years and how life there has developed up to the present day. Hunting, reindeer slaughter and berry picking in the land of the Forest Sámi are also among the exhibition topics.

Naturum Laponia is the gateway to four national parks, two nature reserves and nine Sámi villages. The Laponia World Heritage Site is located in the municipalities of Gällivare and Jokkmokk and offers experiences year-round; access and activities vary by season. From Gällivare, you can reach Naturum Laponia by train, then by bus or car. Check seasonal connections when planning your journey.

Trails and Nature Experiences

The Cultural Trail follows the Vassaraälven through central parts of Gällivare, sharing stories about the town’s history, culture and social change. The trail is 4.2 kilometres long and takes approximately 55 minutes; conditions can affect the distance and time. For people who cannot use the stairs at the viaduct or railway station, there is an accessible section along Industrigatan, Prästgatan and Kaitumvägen.

The area around the E45 also offers connections with nature: the road between Porjus and Gällivare passes through Stubbá Nature Reserve. The area is suitable for short day trips, skiing in the surrounding area and early-morning birdwatching. By the water, Sandviken offers swimming, beach volleyball, picnic areas, grills and firewood; seasonal availability may vary. A park in Gällivare also includes a skateboard and scooter park, an outdoor gym, a multi-sports court, a playground, a barbecue hut and a flower park. Park facilities may change.

Getting Here and Local Cuisine

The cuisine also offers insight into the region: it reflects three cultures that once met there and uses ingredients from lakes, rivers, forests and the mountains.
