Haparanda: Archipelago, Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Haparanda
The Haparanda Archipelago is Sweden’s easternmost archipelago. Long sandy beaches, shallow sea bays, lush deciduous forests and rich flora and fauna shape the landscape. Hiking, birdwatching and swimming are among the activities available here. There are also trails through forests and cultural landscapes, as well as traces of a long history.
Archipelago and outdoor landscapes
The national park in the Haparanda Archipelago includes Sandskär, Selkä-Sarvi, Heikinkari and several smaller islands and skerries. The park is known for its extensive sandy beaches, rich birdlife and clearly visible traces of post-glacial land uplift. In summer, excursion boats run from Cementkajen in central Haparanda to both islands in the archipelago. If you are planning a boat trip, check the seasonal services for your travel dates.
Riekkola-Välivaara has a different kind of landscape, with various forest types interspersed with small lakes, wetlands and coastal meadows. Its location by the sea and at the mouth of the Torne River creates distinctive conditions where fresh and salt water mix. The Haparanda Archipelago offers sport anglers many bays and shallows to explore. Along the coast and in the Bothnian Bay archipelago, fishing with hand-held gear, also known as recreational fishing, is permitted without charge and does not require a fishing licence. Check the current fishing regulations before your trip.
Trails through the seasons
During the summer season, Seskarö Trails offers around 60 kilometres of marked hiking and mountain biking trails. The network also includes several kilometres of kayaking routes and ten rest areas. In winter, around 50 kilometres of winter trails and ski tracks are groomed on Seskarö. The approximately 15-kilometre Vuono hiking trail can be used for walking, running or skiing, depending on the season. It passes through old hay meadows and by cultural and historical remains.
The trail options differ mainly by season and activity: in summer, Seskarö has marked hiking and mountain biking trails, while in winter, groomed winter trails and ski tracks are available. Activities on the Vuono hiking trail also change with the seasons; along the way, you’ll find both landscapes and traces of cultural history. These differences can help you choose the focus of your trip according to the time of year, without assuming that every outing involves the same kind of trail.
Cultural heritage on land and by the river
The Struve Geodetic Arc is a World Heritage Site: its chain of survey points was used from 1816 to 1855 to determine the shape and size of the Earth. Perävaara is the only Swedish survey point on the Struve Geodetic Arc with its original marker still in place. A 400-metre footpath leads to it from a side road. Information signs are located at the car park, at the start of the path and at the survey point itself.
At Kukkolaforsen, two water-powered mills are part of Kulturbyn: the lower mill, dating from around 1840, and the upper mill, built in the 1850s. The Delningsboden, also known as Jakopuoti or the Bell House, was built in 1889 and is among Kukkola’s more valuable buildings from a cultural and historical perspective. River fishing is also part of local history. Fishing with a long-handled dip net has been a centuries-old tradition at Kukkolaforsen; the main catches in the Torne River are whitefish and salmon.
At the Tornedalen Fishing Museum in Kukkolaforsen, you can learn more about river fishing and what lies beneath the surface of the Torne River. Fish can be boiled, fried, salted, smoked or dried. Haparanda also has numerous public artworks, including statues, sculptures and monuments in streets and squares.
Border location and getting your bearings
HaparandaTornio is a cross-border twin city on the border between Sweden and Finland. European route E4 runs through the twin cities of Haparanda and Tornio. Since 2014, the Tornedalen Museum has served as a joint museum for Haparanda and Tornio. Alongside natural landscapes and historic sites, cross-border perspectives are therefore part of the destination’s character.
To find your way around the municipality, the Naturkartan mobile app includes information about nature reserves, swimming areas, fishing spots, hiking trails and snowmobile trails, among other things. Recurring events offer another possible reason to visit: Sommar i parken features daily summer activities for children and young people in July. Happy New Twice celebrates the border between Sweden and Finland. BorderPride and Vinterglöd contribute to inclusion and a vibrant cultural life throughout the year. If an event is important to your trip, check the dates and programme.
When looking for a hotel in Haparanda, you might first consider what you want your trip to focus on: the archipelago landscape, activities on trails in different seasons, or the cultural history of the river and border. This can help you match the destination to your interests before choosing accommodation.
