The Kalix archipelago is described as the northernmost in the world. The landscape also includes the Likskär Nature Reserve, with 25 islands and numerous smaller skerries, as well as the Kalix River, one of Europe’s last unregulated rivers. Alongside these natural features, archaeological sites, historic buildings and the history of log driving shape the region.

Archipelago, river and trails

The waters offer different ways to experience the landscape. You can fish for wild salmon in the rapids of the Kalix River, and for perch in the region’s many lakes. In the archipelago, you can troll for large pike. Kayaks are available to rent, or you can join guided trips on lakes, rivers and through the archipelago. Boat trips in the Kalix archipelago are possible independently or with a guide. The options range from fishing in different waters to exploring by boat.

There are also a variety of routes on land. The municipality has hiking trails, walking paths and training tracks of different lengths. At the Kalix Ski Stadium, a 2.5-kilometre accessible route is laid out; in winter, it serves as a cross-country ski trail. In Fattenborg, a nature trail follows a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, with information boards along the way. These options vary in length, use and trail conditions, so you can choose what best suits your interests when planning your trip.

Winter offers another perspective on the landscape: when the river and sea freeze over, many people head out on foot or on skis, or travel towards the sea by kick-sled or snowmobile. This describes a local winter custom and adds a seasonal dimension to the experiences on the water.

Archaeology and architectural history

Fattenborg is a municipal nature reserve established to protect unique archaeological remains. It contains numerous graves, stone settings, settlement ramparts and trapping systems dating from the Early Bronze Age. Information boards along the boardwalk and an exhibition in the information building complement the nature trail. Here, the landscape and archaeological remains come together.

Kalix Church also combines architectural history with a specific visitor experience: it is Sweden’s northernmost medieval church. Construction probably began in the first half of the 15th century. Groups can book guided visits on Mondays and Wednesdays; check the dates and booking conditions in advance.

Siknäsfortet is a different kind of historic site. Four complete underground levels were carved out of solid rock. Guides take visitors through the decades from the beginning of the Cold War to the decommissioning of the permanent gun emplacement, which has been preserved in its original condition. Opening days and times may change, so it is a good idea to check tour dates before your visit.

At Kalix Copper Works, you can see the remains of the old smelter, mines, slag and a large charcoal-burning platform. Mining here dates back to the 1660s and earlier. This mining history complements the archaeological finds at Fattenborg and the more recent military history of Siknäsfortet.

Log driving and local traditions

Vassholmen is a historic log-sorting site on an island in the Kalix River, dating from the era of log driving. Its preserved buildings and quays give the area significant cultural and historical value. In Kalix, the log-driving museum in the workers’ canteen, the former courthouse, tells the story of log driving and timber sorting on the Kalix River up to 1977, when operations ceased. The island and the museum thus point to different settings connected with the same river history.

Kalix Löjrom is also closely tied to its geographical origin: the product has a protected designation of origin from the European Union. Production, processing and preparation must take place within a defined geographical area. Alongside the historic sites, this gives your trip a connection to a locally rooted product.
