Laisvall is a mining settlement that developed in the forest landscape by Lake Laisan. Its history is tangible in its preserved built heritage, while forests and waterways shape the character of the region. This gives you several themes to consider when planning your trip: local history, nature, fishing and activities such as cross-country skiing or mini golf.

Mining history and preserved buildings

The original Laisvall was a small farming settlement founded in 1789, four kilometres south of present-day Laisvall; the place is now called Laisvallby. The mining settlement later developed in the forest landscape by Lake Laisan. Its buildings clearly reflect the development of mining. The well-preserved buildings as a whole now form a valuable cultural environment.

A preserved steel disc recalls the mining industry and is now a symbol of almost 60 years of mining. The town’s former social life is also part of its history: at the height of its development, Laisvall had a cinema, shops and cafés, as well as a rich cultural life. Together with the preserved buildings, these details give the mining heritage a tangible local character.

Forests and nature reserves

Assjatj Nature Reserve lies just over two kilometres southeast of Laisvall and can be reached via Road 628. Its forest regenerated naturally after a fire and resembles old-growth forest. It includes trees of all ages, including spruce several centuries old. Assjatj therefore has both younger and very old trees in a forest that grew back after a fire.

Laisdalens fjällurskog Nature Reserve extends on both sides of the Laisälven. In the area along the lower Laisälven, coniferous forests shape the landscape; spruce dominates below Laisvall. The two forest areas therefore have different characteristics: Assjatj is notable for its natural regrowth after a fire and trees of different ages, while spruce and coniferous forests define the Laisälven section.

Storlaisan and the Laisälven: fishing and scenery

Lake Storlaisan is more than 30 kilometres long. It is home to grayling, whitefish, perch, large trout and Arctic char. The Laisälven below Storlaisan is of interest to sport fishers and is rich in fish. Grayling dominate there; there is also a good stock of trout, some of them very large.

Laisvall is the centre of the fishing area along the lower Laisälven. Coniferous forests have shaped this area’s landscape. For your bearings, both the lake, with its range of fish species, and the river below it, with its predominance of grayling and stocks of trout, are relevant. These characteristics of the waters can help you understand the landscape and recreational interests around Laisvall.

Cross-country skiing, mini golf and snowmobile trail

Laisvall has lit cross-country ski trails measuring one kilometre and 2.5 kilometres. The one-kilometre trail is the shorter of the two; both are lit. Trail conditions can vary by season. The different lengths offer a practical guide when choosing between a shorter and a longer trail section.

One of the municipality of Arjeplog’s two mini golf courses is in Laisvall. Equipment is collected at the mini kiosk by the mini golf course; payment is made via a mailbox on the wall. The fee for the snowmobile trail in Laisvall can also be paid conveniently at Bröderna Sundström AB. These recreational activities complement the town’s historical and natural attractions with practical things to do.
