Arjeplog: Silver Culture and Mountain Views
Accommodation in Arjeplog
At Torget in the centre of Arjeplog, Sámi cultural history meets the vast landscape of the Arjeplog Mountains. Silvermuseet is next to National Road 95, the Silvervägen. Outside, mountains and waterways shape the view; nearby options range from museum visits to winter activities and trails along rapids.
Silvervägen, Mountain Views and Arrival
Silvervägen, Road 95, runs from Skellefteå to the Arjeplog Mountains and all the way to the Swedish-Norwegian border. Arvidsjaur Airport is 100 kilometres from Arjeplog. For onward travel, you can take an airport transfer or rent a car; check current transport options and schedules before your trip.
Just outside Arjeplog, Galtispuoda rises to 800 metres above sea level. The low mountain is considered easy to access and offers expansive views over the region’s waterways and mountains. Road access can vary in winter. If you’d like to experience the landscape from another perspective, the nearby birdwatching tower in Sälla is in an area rich in birdlife, around eight kilometres from the centre. It rises ten metres above the ground.
Silvermuseet, the Church and the Winter Market
The Silversalen exhibition at Silvermuseet contains nearly 700 Sámi silver objects dating from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Mujttalus offers another perspective on the culture: the exhibition shows Sámi life on both festive occasions and in everyday settings. Nearby Doktorsgården was the home of Dr Einar Wallquist, founder of the Silver Museum. Silvermuseet offers guided tours there every summer; check dates before your trip.
Arjeplog Church stands on a peninsula in Lake Hornavan, right next to the market square. It is open to visitors during the day, though access may vary by season. The Winter Market is also part of the town’s history: the tradition dates back to 1642. A meeting place for community, reunions and trade, it continues to bring people and goods together today.
Trails, Water and Fishing Opportunities
The nearby Märkberget Nature Reserve is home to the mountain of the same name and the powerful Märkforsen rapids on the Laisälven River. A trail of about 1.5 kilometres runs alongside the rapids and leads to a shelter and fire pit. As the condition of such facilities can change, it’s advisable to check before your visit. Arjeplog Municipality also provides excursion guides to hiking trails and summits. The Gröna Bandet route passes through the Arjeplog Mountains.
There are fishing options at different scales: Vaukaleden offers accessible fishing spots on pedestrian jetties in central Arjeplog. The municipality also has eight fly-fishing stretches totalling 105 kilometres. This makes it possible to choose between a fishing spot right in town and a larger network of stretches spread across the municipality.
Winter in Arjeplog
If you’re planning to go cross-country skiing, Djuptjärn has illuminated trails of 1, 2.5, 5 and 20 kilometres. Öberget also has an illuminated trail, 2.5 kilometres long. Galtis is one of the two alpine ski areas listed for Arjeplog. The different trail lengths give you a practical guide to how much time you’d like to spend on a loop.
Seasonal activities include guided snowmobile tours and snowmobile rentals. Arjeplog has 1,600 kilometres of groomed snowmobile trails and routes to choose from; trail conditions depend on the season. Ice-fishing tours are another distinct winter experience: you reach the fishing spot on a large sled pulled by a snowmobile. Check the availability of seasonal activities before your trip.
Food and Craft
During the Edible Country experience, guests gather ingredients with local guides, then cook and eat together. The menu is inspired by forests, lakes and meadows. Another culinary offering is Restaurant Vuonatjviken: it can be reached from Arjeplog by helicopter and offers a two-course lunch beside Lake Riebnes. Details of commercial experiences may vary; ask about availability in advance.
The nearby arts and crafts barn in Marielund sells art and handicrafts, as well as coffee and home-baked treats. In summer, artworks are displayed outdoors on the grounds for the public. Alongside scenery and activities, crafts and a seasonal exhibition offer further reasons to visit.
