When planning your trip to Väckelsång, you can choose between cycling, Lake Åsnen and local history as different areas of focus. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in the village, it may help to consider which of these themes will shape your plans. The routes, the lake and the historic sites each offer something different.

Cycling on different routes

The Sydostleden passes directly through Väckelsång and is designated as cycle route number 2 in Sweden. The stretch south from Lidhem is paved and allows for a comfortable, safe bike ride to Tingsryd without competing car traffic. When choosing a route, you can compare this stretch with the Väckelsångsrundan.

The Väckelsångsrundan runs mostly along smaller paved roads and includes a short stretch on a cycle path closed to car traffic. The ICA in Väckelsång is suggested as a starting point. Surface and traffic arrangements are the most tangible points of comparison: smaller roads shape the Väckelsångsrundan, while the stretch of the Sydostleden described above is characterized by its paved surface and lack of competing car traffic. If a suggested starting point matters to you, use the ICA as a reference for the Väckelsångsrundan.

Lake Åsnen and Ursjöbadet

Lake Åsnen is 3 kilometres from Väckelsång. It features a unique inland archipelago with 1,000 islands, and its shoreline is more than 700 kilometres long. This expansive lake landscape offers a distinct focus alongside the cycling routes.

Ursjöbadet is a bathing area on Lake Åsnen, a few kilometres west of Väckelsång. It has a jetty, changing rooms, toilets, a playground, a barbecue area and parking. If you plan to spend time by the water, the bathing area offers a specific place to visit; Lake Åsnen itself is part of a much larger island and shoreline landscape. If any particular facilities are important to your plans, check their condition before visiting.

The church and early local history

Väckelsång Church has several specific connections to local history. A gilded royal crown is set into its southeast gable, commemorating the foundation stone laid by Crown Prince Oscar. The altarpiece was painted by Captain Salomon Andersson in 1829. The inscription below identifies Crown Prince Oscar as the donor of the painting in the same year. Together, a built memorial and a painting with a donor inscription represent different aspects of the church’s history.

Finds in Väckelsång point to a settlement tradition dating back at least to the Late Stone Age. The earlier church also left archaeological traces: it was demolished in 1828, and its foundations were uncovered during an investigation in 1976. The finds thus range from early settlement to the remains of a later church building.

The local heritage museum and history

Väckelsångs Hembygdsgård is a local heritage museum in a former inn, a few hundred metres from Route 27. The Hembygdsgård houses an old school museum. The grounds also include an Iron Age burial ground with 46 burial mounds. The history of schooling and archaeological traces are two distinct historical themes here.

The factory Lek i Trä in Väckelsång, associated with the Arla cow, offers another perspective on local history. The Arla cow was made there in production runs of 5,000 each; the factory was founded by three brothers. This connection to local manufacturing complements the themes of the church, school and burial ground with a look at the village’s production history.

Exercise at Björkvalla

The Väckelsång exercise trail starts at the Björkvalla sports ground. Around the trail is an activity circuit with signs showing various movement and training exercises. This adds a distinct focus on exercise to the cycling routes described above: the marked exercises give the circuit its own character.
