Urshult Church is located beside Kyrkviken on the southern shore of Lake Åsnen. On the Sydostleden, Urshult marks the lake’s southernmost point; Åsnen is the largest lake in Kronoberg County. On the Åsnen Runt route, almost half the distance is car-free and follows former railway embankments. The Sydostleden and Åsnen Runt therefore offer different reference points for planning your trip: one highlights Urshult’s connection to the lake’s southernmost point, while the other gives a specific proportion of the route and describes its course along former railway embankments.

The church and local history

Urshult Church has an extensive interior dating from 1891, created by church painter Ludvig Frid. At the western entrance to Urshult, beside the church, is Sockenstugan Urshult, a local history museum. The building served as a school in Urshult and as a meeting place for a century. Well-preserved church stables stand next to Sockenstugan. Together, these sites reflect different aspects of local history: the church interior is associated with a specific year and artist, while the building’s former use as a school and meeting place is part of the museum’s history. The church stables add well-preserved historic structures to this picture.

Traditional orchards and cultural landscape

Traditional farming and fruit growing have a longer history in Urshult than in many other parts of the country. Traditional orchards can still be found on several farms in the surrounding area. Since 2015, the orchard landscape around Urshult has been designated as a cultural environment of national interest. Together, the long tradition of fruit growing, the surviving orchards and the designation offer an impression of the area’s agricultural history and present-day cultural landscape.

Swimming area and boat rental

Nearby, Rävabacken is a swimming area at Urshult Camping, right on the shore of Lake Åsnen. It has a bathing jetty, changing rooms, toilets, a barbecue area and a sandy beach. Urshult Camping also offers boat and canoe rentals, which may be seasonal. If you plan to rent a boat or canoe, check in advance whether the service is available during your travel dates. This way, you can account for the swimming area’s facilities and the seasonal rental service as two separate options for enjoying your time by the lake.

Routes and directions

Urshult’s floodlit exercise trail starts at Urdavallen sports ground in Urshult. The 2.4 km trail has two loops: a northern loop of 1.1 km and a southern loop of 1.3 km. The northern loop is therefore the shorter one, while the southern loop is 0.2 km longer. The two distances give you a clear basis for choosing between the loops. Roads 27 and 29 lead to Åsnen National Park from Blekinge; Road 120 runs via Tingsryd, Urshult and Sirkön. If you plan to visit the national park, check current road conditions before setting out, as they can change.
