Orrefors is a destination for travellers interested in glass history and industrial heritage. The Orrefors Museum, Hammarsmedjan and the Orrefors walking trail offer different ways to shape your stay. If you’re looking for a hotel in Orrefors, you can consider whether your trip will focus mainly on glass culture and historic sites, or also include time outdoors.

Glass History and Cultural Landscape

Orrefors is one of the glassworks in Glasriket that have earned international recognition for their innovative and experimental design. Orrefors is also one of four areas in Nybro Municipality designated as being of national interest for cultural landscape conservation. Glass design and cultural landscape therefore offer two perspectives on the place: one leads to the products and history of glassmaking, the other to the recognised significance of the cultural landscape.

The Orrefors Museum is located in the centre of Orrefors. Its exhibition hall displays a historic glass collection from Orrefors glassworks. Next to the museum is a glass shop selling books and unique second-choice glass objects from the heyday of Orrefors glassworks. The collection and shop offer different ways to explore the glasswork: the historic collection takes centre stage here, while there you’ll find books and glass objects from that heyday.

Hammarsmedjan and Industrial Traces

The buildings around Hammarsmedjan date from the 1840s and include the spark furnace and water channels. Hammarsmedjan, together with its spark furnace and the old glassworks building, has been a protected historic building since 2007. These details refer to different aspects of the site: the historic building has been protected since 2007, while the date refers to the buildings around Hammarsmedjan.

Following volunteer work and extensive renovations, Hammarsmedjan reopened as a living museum in 2014. The association at Hammarsmedjan offers guided tours and operates the machines. As the visitor programme may change, check in advance if you have specific plans to confirm whether tours are taking place and the machines will be running.

Orrefors Park is home to a well-preserved industrial setting. Visitors can try glassblowing there. Other historic traces in Orrefors include Hammarsmedjan, a waterwheel and the forge’s long wooden houses. These places and features offer different ways to explore the industrial heritage, and they do not all tell the same story: the visible traces include both buildings and the waterwheel and wooden houses.

Walking Trail and Other Activities

The Orrefors walking trail is 9.5 kilometres long. Around the Orrefors walking trail, some paths are accessible, for example, with a pushchair. If you’d also like to include walking in your trip alongside the cultural and historical attractions, the named trail gives you a specific option. The information about pushchair-accessible paths refers to paths around the walking trail.

The Glassblower Café & Crêperie serves savoury and sweet crêpes, as well as coffee, fika and other drinks. As the café service and menu may change, check in advance what is on offer if you have specific plans. This way, you can include this culinary aspect in your travel plans without conflating it with the historical themes of the museums and industrial sites.
