Discover Virserum: Art, Craft and Nature
Accommodation in Virserum
Virserum offers a range of reasons to visit: contemporary art, crafts and industrial history, as well as trails through nature. Each theme offers a different focus. You can shape your time here around your interests and choose between culture and outdoor activities.
Art, Architecture and History
Virserums Konsthall showcases contemporary art across an exhibition space of 1,600 m² and opened in 1998. Its building is also a subject in its own right: Pappershuset has a curved roof made of glulam arches and diffuse lighting. The exhibitions and the building’s design offer different perspectives on the art gallery.
A statue of Nils Dacke, created by Arvid Källström, stands in Virserum’s market square. Dacke led the uprising against Gustav Wasa; the statue was erected in 1956 in his memory and to commemorate the events of the Dacke Uprising. The narrow-gauge railway between Västervik and Virserum is also part of the town’s history: it was the first railway line in Sweden to be designated a historic monument.
Industry, Crafts and Everyday History
Virserums möbelindustrimuseum is a living industrial museum and a recreation of a furniture factory from the 1920s. The Telecommunications Museum covers 650 square metres and is dedicated to the history of telecommunications. Its timeline spans around 100 years, from old manual exchanges to modern satellite technology. The exhibition also includes 300 landline telephones. The progression from manual switching to satellite technology brings the changes in communication to life.
Fröåsa Handpappersbruk offers another example of craftsmanship: it is Sweden’s only surviving hand paper mill. At Hembygdspark, you can see historic building styles and home interiors. The park has around 15 buildings dating from the early 17th to the 20th century, along with extensive collections spanning from the Stone Age to the present day. Vävstuga has up to 30 looms across two floors. Together, these places offer different ways to explore work, domestic life and craft production.
Walks and Longer Trails
Länsmansgårdsängen Nature Reserve lies in northwestern Virserum, on the shore of Lake Virserum. It is a popular area for walks, with several trails and benches. Its lakeside location makes it a pleasant place to walk and take breaks along the way.
For longer outings, you can compare Virserumsleden and Hjortleden by trail length. The two routes follow the same path for the first 6 km before splitting up. Virserumsleden is about 9 km long and Hjortleden 19 km; both pass through forests and hilly terrain alongside lakes. Their approximate total lengths give you an indication of how far you will travel. Trail routes and conditions may change, so check local information before setting out.
