Explore Lönneberga through its distinctive cultural and natural attractions: the church stands out for the location of its tower, the local heritage centre in Åkarp brings together historic buildings and objects, and walking trails lead through varied landscapes. There is also a life-size Emil sculpture, as well as the history of technology and literature. You can shape your stay around what interests you most—architecture, traditional technology, biographical traces or a hike.

The church, the local heritage centre and the history of technology

Lönneberga Church was built between 1870 and 1872. Its tower stands on the side opposite to the usual arrangement. This distinctive feature gives architecture enthusiasts a specific reason to appreciate the building not only for its age, but also for its unusual layout.

Old buildings, furniture and objects were brought together at the Lönneberga local heritage centre in Åkarp to make traditional culture accessible as an open-air museum. The grounds include, among other things, a granary and a flax-drying kiln. The site thus brings together different forms of heritage: individual objects and larger architectural structures. If you are interested in regional cultural history, you can shift your attention between the two.

The history of technology comes to life at Ålunds Mechanical Workshop. A Dunberg-Pettersson engine powers the workshop and an adjoining carpenter’s shed, which contains a firewood saw and a splitting plane. The engine is believed to be the only surviving engine of its kind. Here, the focus is not just on individual machines, but also on the workspaces and tools powered by the engine. This offers a different way to explore the history of technology than the objects and buildings collected at the local heritage centre.

Emil, literature and biographical traces

A life-size Emil sculpture can be seen in Lönneberga. The colourful figure was created in 1998 by the versatile artist Torbjörn Berg and is housed in a small carpenter’s shed on the main road. The shed protects it from wind and rain. The artwork’s impression is shaped not only by its subject, but also by its year of creation, its artist and its sheltered location. It is worth checking local visiting arrangements before your trip.

Albert Engström was born in Bäckfall in 1869. His childhood and impressions of the harsh landscape of Småland—with its tough farmers, superstition and mysticism—had a profound influence on his writing and artistic work. For literature enthusiasts, this offers both a specific biographical connection and a chance to explore the themes that shaped his work.

The Oscar Hedström memorial stone commemorates Carl Oscar Hedström, the designer of the Indian motorcycle. The foundations of the cottage where Hedström was born in 1871 remain at the site of the memorial stone. This connection between his technical achievement and the surviving remains of a building offers two ways to learn about his life: his role as a motorcycle designer and his birthplace.

Hiking among forests, fields and lakes

The Emilleden is about 40 kilometres long and can be started at the Lönneberga local heritage centre. It passes through forests and villages and alongside fields and pastures where animals graze. The Lönnebergaleden connects the Ostkustleden with the Sevedeleden. Its route crosses a vibrant farming landscape, through forests and past lakes.

The two trails offer different details to help you plan: for the Emilleden, the length and a possible starting point are specified; for the Lönnebergaleden, the links to two other trails and the landscape are described. If you are choosing a route, you can weigh up whether an approximate distance or its place within a trail network matters more to you.
