Rosenfors – Industrial history by the Silverån
Accommodation in Rosenfors
Rosenfors brings together two perspectives: the history of an industrial town and the river landscape along the Silverån. When looking for a hotel in Rosenfors, it helps to consider both sides of the town. Its industrial heritage stretches from the founding of an ironworks to buildings and remains from different periods; the river setting adds its own landscape perspective to this history.
Industrial history and transport
An ironworks was founded in Rosenfors in 1802 by the owner of the Hagelsrum blast furnace. The town’s historical development also included a railway line through Rosenfors, a station, and a branch line into the industrial area. These features show that the town’s industrial history encompasses not only individual buildings but also its former transport infrastructure.
The 20th-century cultural environment includes warehouses, a factory building, a works office, a manor house, and the surrounding workers’ housing. The production buildings, administration, manor house, and homes thus offer different insights into the industrial setting. Together, they form more than just the backdrop to a single factory building.
Buildings and industrial traces
On the north bank of the Silverån, the present-day mechanical workshop is particularly prominent. The large complex includes buildings dating from 1916, as well as extensions built in several phases through the 1960s. This sequence makes several construction phases within the same complex visible.
Remains of a foundry survive on the south bank. A former oat groats mill is also part of the town’s industrial heritage; the manor house is located there as well. Another prominent feature is the dam embankment, which has four openings with small islands containing older industrial remains between them. A power plant that is in operation stands in the middle of the dam embankment. As its operational status may change, check its current status before making plans, if needed.
The Silverån and its river landscape
Rosenfors lies on the Silverån, about 1.4 kilometres before it joins the Emån. The stretch of the Silverån between Hagelsrum and Rosenfors follows a more or less meandering course. The Silverån Valley near Rosenfors forms a relatively untouched wilderness area designated as being of national interest for nature conservation. This means that two distinct themes come together when considering the town: specific industrial sites and a valley shaped by its landscape.
Getting oriented and access
Rosenfors is located on National Road 34, which helps with orientation. At the same time, the cultural environment is difficult for visitors to access because large parts of it lie within the still-operating Rosenfors bruk industrial area. The manor house and associated buildings, as well as older industrial remains, are on private property. Take this access situation into account if sightseeing is the main focus of your stay.
