Fagerhult lies east of Lake Välen on flat to gently hilly, sandy moraine soil. Välen is a bathing area in Fagerhult. There are also two walking trails, each 2.5 kilometres long, the Neo-Gothic Fagerhults kyrka and cultural-historical sites in the surrounding area. This gives you a choice of different themes when planning your stay: landscape, activity, architectural history and regional food.

Explore Fagerhult on foot

The Fagerhultsrundan is a 2.5-kilometre circular trail that starts at the school in Fagerhult. Twelve information boards line the route. The illuminated Elljusspår also starts at Fagerhults skola and is likewise 2.5 kilometres long. As both trails are the same length, you can compare them based on their described features: the Fagerhultsrundan is a circular trail with information boards, while the Elljusspår is distinguished by its lighting. If you value information boards on a walking trail, the Fagerhultsrundan is the one for you; the Elljusspår offers an illuminated alternative.

Lake Välen and fishing from the shore

Lake Välen is in the immediate vicinity of Fagerhult. It is up to 18 metres deep, with an average depth of about 4 metres. The maximum depth and approximate average provide two different measures of the lake. Fishing from the shore is generally considered good, especially on the eastern side. Fishing spots are located at Välsgärde and Hällaklint, near the Välen bathing area in the southwest of the lake, and at the road bridge in the southeast. Fishing access and local regulations can change, so check the current conditions before your visit.

Church architecture and historical traces

Fagerhults kyrka was built in 1894 and is one of the more elaborate Neo-Gothic churches in Kalmar County. The year it was built provides a point of reference in time, while its Neo-Gothic classification describes its architectural distinction. An altarpiece from the 15th century was transferred from the old church to today’s Fagerhults kyrka. An older work of art and the later church building thus represent different historical periods. The churchyard is believed to have existed since as early as the 14th century. This gives a timeline comprising the possible early history of the churchyard, the 15th-century altarpiece and the church built in 1894.

Another historical trace leads to Ringhult, northeast of Fagerhult. The remains of Ringhults borg, a fortified medieval manor, are located there. Unlike the Neo-Gothic church, the focus here is a medieval manor complex.
