Fågelfors offers several specific points of interest to help you plan your trip: cycling routes with named itineraries, industrial and working history at the Nostalgia Museum, and art in the church. The two cycling routes differ in length and the places they pass through; the museum adds industrial and cultural history to your understanding of the area. This lets you decide in advance whether your trip should focus more on cycling, local history, or a combination of the two.

Cycling routes by length and itinerary

The red cycling route runs from Fågelfors via Ljusholm, Lixhult, and Nybygget back to Fågelfors and is 14.0 kilometres long. The blue route runs from Fågelfors via Bruket, Hytten, and Lilla Klobo back to Fågelfors; at 6.1 kilometres, it is 7.9 kilometres shorter. There is also an optional detour to Hembygdsgården on the blue route.

The blue route passes through Fågelfors, which developed with Bruket as its vibrant centre, among lakes, the Nötån River, and the surrounding cultural landscape. The black cycling route passes the meadow at Horvan.

When cycling in Fågelfors and the nearby area, be sure to take the terrain into account. The cycling routes run partly along country roads and forest paths, and partly along trails only. A mountain bike may be suitable for this mix of terrain; you may also need to push your bike. Check current route conditions before setting off. A route map dated 24 November 2021 lists numerous worthwhile destinations and attractive cycling routes in Fågelfors and the nearby area; trail conditions and route maintenance may change.

Industrial History and Culture

Nostalgia in Fågelfors is a museum of working and industrial history. The exhibition “Från Järn till Trä” covers 280 years of industrial history and describes how Fogelfors Bruk evolved from 18th-century ironworking into a modern wood industry. The title—“From Iron to Wood”—summarises this development succinctly.

Nostalgia also has an exhibition about revue king Ernst Rolf, whose roots lie in Fågelfors. The two subjects offer contrasting perspectives: the long-term development of industrial work and an individual with ties to the area.

The most significant work of art in Fågelfors församlingskyrka is a large carpet on the choir floor. It was designed and woven by Kalmar artist Ann-Mari Holke. The choir floor is the floor of the chancel, the liturgical area around the altar; Holke’s large carpet is therefore in the church’s chancel.

Swimming Area

Övrasjön (Fågelfors) is a swimming area in Högsby Municipality. If you plan to swim there, check the water conditions beforehand.
