Nässjö between forest trails and railway history
Accommodation in Nässjö
Forests, lakes and wetlands shape the outdoor experience along the Höglandsleden; in Nässjö, street art and railway history are also part of the visitor experience. Depending on your interests, you can combine your stay with longer hikes, shorter walks or cultural activities.
Hiking the Höglandsleden and exploring Lövhult
Five stages of the Höglandsleden pass through Nässjö Municipality. The trail is 44 Swedish miles long in total and stretches across the Småland Highlands. It is primarily intended for hiking, but can also be cycled. Along the way, the route passes through extensive forests, open fields and meadows, as well as lakes and wetlands. Shelters and overnight cabins are located along the trail; orange markings and signs help with navigation.
Information for planning the stages includes distances, how to get there by bus or train, parking options, and nature and culture along the trail. Shelters, lakes and rest areas are also part of the route information. Check transport details again before your trip. If you’re looking for shorter walks instead of a long-distance trail, you can use the nature guide for Nässjö as an alternative: it describes six walks in and around Nässjö, ranging from just under five to 7.5 kilometres.
The trail conditions vary considerably. The nature guide describes both mostly paved paths, suitable for strollers and wheelchairs, and winding forest tracks and trails. The right walk therefore also depends on the kind of path you prefer; check the conditions before setting off.
Lövhult: nature reserve and activities
The Lövhult Nature Reserve consists mostly of forest, with meadows and pastureland. Lövhultabäcken, along with smaller streams and brooks, runs through the area. Numerous marked trails wind through the landscape, including some that are wheelchair accessible. Shelters, fire pits and picnic areas are also part of the visitor facilities.
Activities in Lövhult include hiking, cycling and disc golf. There is also mountain biking and a challenging obstacle course; in winter, you can cross-country ski on groomed trails. The area offers a range of activities, but they do not all have the same trail conditions or level of difficulty. Lövhult is near Nässjö and can be reached by bike, car or bus. From the “Nässjö Lövhult” bus stop, it’s about a kilometre on foot to the nature reserve. Check access and travel information in advance.

Nässjö konsthall at Kulturhuset Pigalle presents contemporary art from local, regional, national and international perspectives. Six to eight exhibitions are held there each year. A signposted street art route runs through Nässjö. Along the way, you can view murals and read the stories behind the artworks. The murals are presented as expressions of the city’s cultural life and industrial heritage; nearly every year, a new one is added. Several statues and sculptures can be found in central Nässjö and are within walking distance of Nässjö resecentrum.
The Nässjö Järnvägsmuseum tells the story of when the railway arrived in Nässjö in the 19th century and how it shaped the city’s development. Its collection ranges from small uniform badges and model railways to full-size locomotives and carriages; it also includes extensive documentation on railway history. The Nässjö Järnvägsmuseum association runs trips on a historic train at regular intervals. Dinner is served in a dining car during the journey. Check the dates of individual trips when planning your visit.

A bus terminal is located right next to the railway station at Nässjö resecentrum. If you’re planning various excursions, you can include the town’s cultural attractions and nature experiences in your travel plans. Check transport and visitor information as relevant to your plans.
