Älvros: Pilgrim Trail, Fäbod Culture and Church History
Accommodation in Älvros
Älvros can be viewed through several aspects of its cultural history: a medieval pilgrim trail, traditional Fäbodvallar, ironworking sites and the history of the old church shape the themes of the village. If you are planning a trip and looking for a hotel, these highlights can help you understand Älvros as a destination. The village’s history spans from the Middle Ages to more recent association activities.
Älvros on the medieval pilgrim trail
In the Middle Ages, the village of Älvros lay along an old pilgrim trail. It led through Härjedalen to the tomb of Saint Olav in Nidaros, present-day Trondheim. The village’s history thus connects a specific stop in Älvros with the wider destination of the pilgrimage. Mentioning Nidaros alongside the present-day name Trondheim helps place this historic destination in context. The pilgrim trail forms a distinct cultural-historical theme alongside the village’s agricultural and craft heritage.
Fäbod culture and historic buildings
There are many traditional Fäbodvallar in the countryside around Älvros. They are part of the rural surroundings and extend the picture beyond the village center. One specific example is Jo Jonsvallen in Västremmen: it is the best-preserved of the four Fäbodvallar there. Historically, Jo Jonsvallen was the home Fäbod of a farm in Älvros kyrkby. This association connects the site with the village’s history and also makes its former function as a home Fäbod tangible.
The relatively old buildings at Jo Jonsvallen date from the 17th to the 19th century. One storehouse bears the inscription “1669” and is probably the oldest building at the site. The age range of the buildings and the date inscribed on the storehouse offer two different historical reference points: a broader period and a specifically dated building.
Ironworking and church history
Ironworking is also part of Älvros’s history. There are numerous ironworking sites in the village, associated with the use of bog iron ore in the Late Middle Ages and in later periods. The timeline therefore covers more than a single era. Together with the Fäbodvallar, this subject offers another perspective on the historical use of the surrounding area.
Church history provides another timeline. When a new church was built in the village in the 1880s, Älvros gamla kyrka was preserved. After restoration, the old church was brought back into use. Its preservation, the construction of the new church and the later restoration thus belong to different chapters in its history.
Getting oriented and association activities
As a point of reference, Älvros kyrkby is on the country road between Sveg and Östersund. The activities of the local heritage association also offer a glimpse into the village’s cultural life. Reports from the association in 2019 and 2023 record that the Hembygdsfest marked the end of the summer activities in several years; traditionally, it was held on the first Sunday in August. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the specific event date.
A 2019 activity report by the association also describes an exhibition at Älvros Hembygdsgården featuring household items, textiles and handicrafts. The exhibition can therefore be understood as part of the association’s activities at the time.
