Storlien combines ski routes and alpine runs with hiking and cycling trails, natural surroundings and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Storlien, these differences can help you choose the timing and focus of your stay more deliberately.

Skiing and winter routes

North of the railway line, there are seven ski routes totalling just over 40 kilometres. South of the line are five ski trails ranging from 2.5 to over 16 kilometres in length. The measurements refer to different things: in the north, the total length of all the routes is given, while in the south, the range of lengths of the individual trails is given. When comparing the routes, bear this difference in mind rather than treating the total distance and individual trail lengths as equivalent. Ski trail grooming may vary depending on the time of year; check conditions before setting out. A winter route leads from Storlien to Blåhammaren and Sylarna. The alpine ski area in Storlien has nine ski lifts and 23 runs. Here, lifts and runs are counted instead of trail lengths—a different measure of the alpine options.

Hiking and cycling

The Blomsterstigen in Storlien was laid out in 1890 and is believed to be Sweden’s first hiking trail used for health and recreation. A hiking trail in Storlien offers views of Snasahögarna, Sylarna and Stenfjället. The cycling trail network comprises eight routes: Sandtjärnsrundan, Ridstigen, Vindarnas Tempel, Skurdalsporten, Atlantleden, Lyxlinjen, Serpentinen Storlien and Smuggler’s Run. The cycling trails are often shared with hikers. The northern part of the cycling trail network is more family-friendly than the more challenging southern part. When choosing a route, you can therefore take into account both shared use and the different character of the two areas.

Railway and local history

A Trafikverket route notice, last updated on 26 October 2022, describes the Bräcke–Storlien railway section as continuing towards Trondheim in Norway. Check the current timetable for a specific train connection. Storlien station is 592 metres above sea level and is Sweden’s highest railway station. The railway line between Östersund and Trondheim opened in 1882. Storliens first ski lift, Slalomliften, began operating in 1942. There are 60 years between the opening of the railway line and the start of operations of the first ski lift—two milestones in the local history.

Nature and paddling

Storlien’s bird sanctuary includes wetlands, the larger pond Topptjärn, smaller pools and scattered areas of mountain birch forest. Alongside sporting activities, the natural surroundings—with their varied bodies of water and mountain birch forest—can therefore also be a theme for your trip. Canoes can be rented in Storlien for paddling on mountain lakes. Canoe rentals may be seasonal; check availability for your travel dates.
