Mörsil combines local history with a range of ways to spend time outdoors or explore local culture. Highlights include Römmen, Mörsil’s local heritage farm, on the site of the former Mörsil Skans fortification; the history of the sanatorium; and a local recreational sports area. There is also a bird sanctuary on the Indalsälven, the Mörsil–Hålland pilgrimage trail and the swimming pool at Mörsil’s bathhouse. These different highlights make it easy to tailor your stay to history, trails or nature.

Local History and Visiting Information

Römmen is Mörsil’s local heritage farm, located where Mörsil Skans was built, a 17th-century fortification. A later chapter in the area’s history is marked by Mörsil Sanatorium: it opened for patients in 1891 and was Sweden’s first private sanatorium. The fortification and the opening of the sanatorium therefore span several centuries of local history.

Mörsil Church is also a local cultural attraction. It opens sporadically when staff are on site; visits can also be booked. If you plan to visit the church, keep these arrangements in mind.

Trails and Activities

Mörsil’s recreational sports area has routes for hiking, running and cross-country skiing. These three activities offer different ways to explore the area on foot or on cross-country skis. The S:t Olavsleden runs through the entire area and passes through Semlan on its way into Åre Municipality.

Another named hiking option is the Mörsil–Hålland pilgrimage trail. It is 19.1 kilometres long. This gives you different points of reference when choosing: the recreational sports area offers several activities, while the pilgrimage trail has a specific distance. This makes it easier to compare the options based on the activity you want and the distance you plan to cover.

Nature and Local Highlights

Five small islands in the Indalsälven, beside the bridge in Mörsil, form a bird sanctuary. The exact number of islands, their location in the river and their protected status give this area a clear connection to nature. Alongside local history and trails, the bird sanctuary is a distinct highlight for exploring Mörsil.

Handmade food products are made at Kretsloppshuset, including herb salt, juice, jams, glögg and vinegar. The garden in front of the house was designed by Mirjam Åkerblom in 2006 and offers seating for the café’s summer guests. Food production and garden design are two distinct aspects of this place. Mörsil station is just a few minutes’ walk from Kretsloppshuset—a useful landmark if you’re exploring this part of town.

Mörsil’s bathhouse has a swimming pool measuring 12.5 × 6 metres. The water is heated to 31°C. These pool dimensions and water temperature are specific features of the bathhouse, alongside the historical, natural and sporting themes that define Mörsil.
