Unnaryd: Culture, History and Nature
Accommodation in Unnaryd
Unnaryd offers a range of options to consider when planning a trip: a museum with collections and courses, historic sites, hiking trails and activities on the water. The experiences vary considerably, from visiting a cultural site to canoeing or walking through a nature reserve.
Culture, Crafts and History
At the Bonadsmuseum, visitors, researchers and artists can study collections of bonader (decorative textiles) in person or digitally via Digitalt Museum. Guided tours of the museum and park can be booked year-round. Check the seasonal arrangements before visiting. Painting courses are also on offer, giving you another reason to keep the museum in mind.
The Vägvisaren in Unnaryd is a boundary stone dating from 1777 that was moved here and used as a signpost. It brings together two functions: a boundary stone as a historic type of marker and its later use for navigation. For anyone interested in local heritage, it is a distinct, compact place to visit.
Brunnsbacka Sågkvarn is a restored water-powered sawmill with a mill and a shingle planer. The site thus represents several elements of historic craft technology, not just the sawmill itself. Bedjarör represents another chapter of the past: this Iron Age burial ground is known for its many remains of rare Iron Age dolmens. Together, these sites offer different insights into craftsmanship and early history.
Hiking and Nature near Unnaryd
The Brunnsbackaleden trail is about 4.1 kilometres long, starts at Hembygdsparken in Unnaryd and passes through the Ödegärdet Nature Reserve. The Nässjaleden trail is three kilometres long, runs through varied scenery and leads to the lakeshore. It is therefore shorter than the Brunnsbackaleden; the trails also differ in their described routes and destinations. Check local conditions before hiking, as trail details may change.
As well as being part of the route, Ödegärdet offers a specific natural feature: more than 130 lichen species have been recorded on beech trees in the nature reserve. If you are interested in biodiversity, this figure adds a distinctive group of organisms to your view of the landscape, without requiring you to follow another hiking trail.
By Lake Unnen: Swimming and Paddling
Lake Unnen lies right next to the village of Unnaryd. There is a bathing beach with a sandy shore, a bathing jetty and an accessibility-adapted ramp. This makes it easy to see a visit to the shore and the paddling options as different ways to enjoy the water.
The 29-kilometre Unnen–Bolmen–Slätten canoe route is a loop that starts at Lake Unnen, south of Unnaryd. Another paddling route runs from Unnen in Unnaryd along a river to Lake Bolmen, then continues south towards the Bolmån and Lagan rivers, which flow on to the sea. The loop and the route described by direction thus differ in form. Water levels, portage points and access conditions may change; check them locally before paddling.
