Ljugarn: Beach, History and Coastal Trails
Accommodation in Ljugarn
When choosing a hotel in Ljugarn, it is worth first deciding what you would like to focus on during your stay: the beach, cultural heritage or outdoor activities. The area offers specific points of interest for each—from a sandy beach about one kilometre long to historic buildings and hiking trails of varying lengths. This lets you plan each day around the interests that matter most to you on your trip.
Coast and Landscape
Ljugarn has a sandy beach about one kilometre long. The Folhammar nature reserve is located in the wider surrounding area, just over a kilometre northeast of Ljugarn. Its rauk field stretches for 500 metres and features numerous rauks, some up to six metres high.
A paved path makes Folhammar accessible by pushchair and wheelchair; adapted barbecue areas provide close-up access to the rauks. At Ljugarn Camping, a wheelchair ramp leads down to the beach. If you need either of these access routes for your plans, check the condition of the facilities before your visit.
Local Cultural History
Ljugarn was Gotland’s first seaside resort. Four small museums are located around Ljugarn harbour. Check current opening hours before your visit.
Strandridaregården in Ljugarn was probably built in the 1720s. It is the last strandridaregård on Gotland to have been preserved in its original condition; the upper floor houses Sweden’s only permanent customs museum.
A post mill stands on Lotsbacken, at the highest point of the promontory. Built in 1828, it was intended for use by the pilots. Together with Ljugarn’s history as Gotland’s first seaside resort, it offers further insights into the area’s history.
Hiking Trails and Activities
Ljugarn has four local hiking trails ranging from three to nine kilometres in length, as well as a shorter 1.7-kilometre loop. Benches and, in some places, picnic tables are located along the trails; they are easy to walk and suitable for all hikers. Check the current trail markers and maintenance before setting out.
The coastal hiking section between Ljugarn and Folhammar is about twelve kilometres long. The 73-kilometre Östkustleden passes through Ljugarn and follows the coast between Anga and Närsholm. These figures refer to different scales: the first describes an individual section, while the second is the total length of Östkustleden. This distinction can help you choose between a single section and the longer coastal hiking trail when planning your trip.
Ljugarns GK is a nine-hole woodland golf course designed by architect Jan Sederholm. Check current playing opportunities before your trip. Surfing is also available in Ljugarn, but may depend on the season and weather. If surfing is important to your trip, check what is on offer during your travel dates.
