Slite brings together archipelago nature, beaches, cycling routes and traces of local history. When looking for accommodation in Slite, you can consider whether you are especially interested in nature, outdoor activities or culture as you plan your stay. The area’s varied attractions include the Slite skärgård Nature Reserve, Slite bad beach, hiking and mountain biking trails, and the island of Enholmen.

Archipelago Scenery and Nature

The Slite skärgård Nature Reserve covers more than 6,000 hectares and consists mostly of water. It is the only area on Gotland with a pronounced archipelago character. The area has high natural values both in the water and on land. Those interested in birdlife will find a rich variety of birds here; traces of cultural history recall limestone quarrying, fishing and seafaring. Typical geological formations include sea stacks, beach spits and beach ridges.

The landscape around Slite is also characterised by limestone-rich alvar. Parts of the cultural landscape are maintained through grazing. Bogeviken, a shallow marine bay separated from the open sea, lies southwest of Slite. It is known for its rich birdlife and as a fish spawning area. The nature theme in the area therefore centres on both geological coastal formations and a variety of habitats.

Slite bad and Bogeviken

Slite bad is a shallow sandy beach more than 200 metres long. The beach has been adapted for accessibility and has a ramp. A beach wheelchair can be borrowed from Slite Intresseförening. If you plan to use this option, check the current borrowing arrangements in advance. Bus routes 20 and 22 stop directly at the beach; check the current timetable when planning your journey.

The beach and Bogeviken offer different connections with nature: Slite bad centres on the sandy beach and bathing area, while the bay southwest of the town is shaped by its shallow location, separated from the open sea, its birdlife and its role as a fish spawning area. If you choose Slite for its coastline, you can take these different landscape features into account when planning, without treating them as a specific route.

Hiking and Cycling

Slite has a marked, ten-kilometre hiking trail that runs mostly along the water. Its length and route provide two specific points of reference for planning your walk. For cycling, Gotland Bike Park is based in and around Slite and offers road cycling and mountain biking routes. There are also prepared mountain biking trails in Slite and the surrounding area, with easier and more challenging sections. A long mountain biking trail runs around Boge.

The options differ not only in how you get around: the marked hiking trail has a stated length and runs mostly close to the water, while the mountain biking trails include easier and more challenging sections. If you would like to divide your time between hiking, road cycling and mountain biking, these details can help you plan each activity separately.

Enholmen and Local History

The well-preserved ruins of Karlsvärds fästning are located on Enholmen. The fortress was built after Sweden lost Ösel; it offers a way to trace Swedish military history from the 17th century to the present day. Visitors are welcome to explore the island on foot. However, an important access restriction applies to the donjons and defensive structures: they can only be visited on a guided tour. Before your visit, check the current tour and booking options.

The Slite Industrial Museum also focuses on local history. It is a small museum in a residential building and displays historical material from more than 100 years of Slite’s cement factory history. The museum is open on Tuesdays from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.; alternatively, visits can be arranged by telephone or electronically. As opening hours and arrangements may change, check the current options before planning your visit.

Discover the Town

Slite Church stands on a hill in the middle of Slite and offers views of the town, the sea and Bogeviken. It complements the nature and history themes with a view of the town itself. When planning your stay, you can choose between the beach, the landscape, cycling and hiking trails, and the historic sites you would like to explore further.
