Discover Gothem
Accommodation in Gothem
Gothem can be explored from several angles: medieval church art, protected nature, traditional meadow management and maritime history are all specific travel themes. The distinctions are useful when planning. Gothem Church and the Bulhus in Fjärdinge änge offer a glimpse into architectural history, while Storsund and the meadow present different aspects of nature. The harbour, fishing settlements and routes add maritime locations as well as opportunities for walks and cycling trips.
Medieval architectural history at Gothem Church
Gothem Church was built in several phases, from the early 13th century to the mid-14th century. It replaced the chancel area of an older Romanesque stone church dating from the 12th century. The replacement involved the chancel area, not the entire older church. The building’s history therefore brings together a Romanesque predecessor and the later church.
Inside, the church preserves medieval wall paintings and furnishings. These include choir stalls and a sacrament house, both from the 14th century. A permanently installed ramp leads through the western entrance.
Storsund: lake, marsh and birdlife
Protected Storsund is a shallow lake covering just over 30 hectares, surrounded by marshland and coniferous forest. At least 15 orchid species have been recorded in the area around Storsund. The birdlife is also diverse: breeding birds at the lake include grey herons, cranes and several species of duck.
Flower meadow and Bulhus in Fjärdinge änge
Fjärdinge änge is a traditionally managed meadow with abundant flowers in spring and summer. This abundance of flowers is therefore seasonal. Fjärdinge änge is also home to a Bulhus dating from the mid-18th century. It was relocated there from the Fjärdinge farm. The meadow combines traditional management with a specific building whose history includes an earlier location and a later relocation.
Fishing huts and summer at Botvaldevik harbour
More than ten fishing huts still stand in a row at Botvaldevik harbour. In summer, there is also a bathing ladder and bathing platforms at the south pier. A total of 18 fishing settlements have been named in Gothem; most can still be seen and visited.
Walking paths and a cycling route
A road about four kilometres long leads to Gothemhammar, reaching the tip of the headland. There, pleasant walking paths run alongside the road and along forest trails. Cykelled 5 is a cycling route in Gothem about 15 kilometres long. The options can thus be distinguished by activity: a cycling route on the one hand, and walks along the road and forest trails on the other. The approximately four kilometres refer to the road to the tip of the headland; the roughly 15 kilometres refer to the Cykelled 5 cycling route.
