Katthammarsvik: Limestone History, Culture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Katthammarsvik
The harbour and bathing area are among Katthammarsvik’s present-day landmarks. With a cultural centre, historic buildings and nearby natural landscapes and hiking destinations, there are different ways to plan your trip. These range from local history and seasonal events to routes with specified distances.
Limestone History and Katthamra Gård
The limestone industry shaped Katthammarsvik as a workers’ settlement for centuries. Katthamra Gård offers a distinct historical connection: Peder Fleming was its first known owner and acquired the farm in 1652. Parts of the buildings date from the Middle Ages; Katthamra Gård is also the only manor house on Gotland. The year 1652 marks Fleming’s acquisition of the farm, not the construction date of the medieval building sections. The history of its ownership and the older building fabric are therefore two distinct historical reference points.
Landscape and Cultural History Nearby
The nearby Grogarnsberget features alvar and rocky landscapes, pine woodland, small wetlands and open pebble beaches. The remains of Gotland’s second-largest hillfort are also located on the mountain. Here, natural features and a cultural-historical landmark come together. If you are interested in both, you can consider the landscape and the hillfort as distinct aspects of the same mountain.
The Östergarnsberget Nature Reserve is also nearby. Its nature trail is six kilometres long and runs around large parts of the reserve. Several old lime kilns stand at the foot of Östergarnsberget, opposite the turn-off to Katthammarsvik. The trail and the kilns offer different points of reference for planning: a clearly measured circuit in the reserve and another historic landmark in the surrounding area.
Cultural Programme in Katthammarsvik
The Östergarns Bygdegård cultural centre in Katthammarsvik offers cinema, theatre, lectures, music and other cultural activities. In summer, discussion evenings are regularly held on Tuesdays, summer cinema on Thursdays and children’s matinées on Sundays. The programme thus includes different types of events on set days of the week. If you want to attend a particular event, check the dates before your trip.
Hiking Trails and Practical Planning
The Östkustleden offers a different scale for longer hikes than the nature trail. A route description published on 31 January 2024 calls it Gotland’s longest hiking trail, at 73 kilometres. The same description lists a day hike from Katthammarsvik to Herrvik and back, covering a total of 14.5 kilometres. The figures refer to different types of routes: the six-kilometre trail in the reserve, the day hike and the total length of the hiking trail. Check the route and conditions before setting out.
Bus route 41 runs from Visby and stops in Katthammarsvik. Check the current timetable before travelling, as bus information may change. This lets you plan your journey independently of the hiking route you choose.
