In Harmånger, the church, the Kastalen and the Hembygdsgård are highlights; the Harmångersån offers scenery and water activities. In Sindra, a path and views of Storsjön come together with a summer service. These different attractions can help you plan your trip around your own interests.

Church and Historic Buildings

Harmångers kyrka was probably built at the end of the 12th century or the beginning of the 13th century. The medieval Kastalen stands right next to it. Two bells hang in the Kastalen, both cast by Andreas Höök in 1665. They are believed to be the oldest bells still in use in Hälsingland. Here, an early building history dated approximately meets bells with an exact casting year.

Harmångers Hembygdsgård also offers another perspective on the history of the area. It is located fairly centrally on Karlsberg in Harmånger. The old Harmånger church school, built in 1866, stands there; many of its furnishings have been preserved and supplemented. The Hembygdsgård also includes an old vicarage from the 18th century, largely preserved in its original condition. The church school and vicarage offer historical points of interest different from those of the church and Kastalen: their year of construction, preserved furnishings and state of preservation each provide their own clues.

River Scenery and Canoe Trips

In the Harmångersbygden, the Harmångersån runs through an open agricultural landscape. A report by the County Administrative Board from 2024 mentions grayling and crayfish in the river, as well as sea trout that are particularly worthy of protection. Historically, the Harmångersån was also an important salmon river. A visit to the river therefore offers both scenery and a glimpse of its history as a salmon river.

You can canoe and fish on the Harmångersån near Harmånger. For a longer canoe trip, consider the section of the Nordanstigs Kanotled from Harmånger to Kustleden. It is considered scenic and includes some stretches with fast-flowing water; allow at least four hours. This makes it easy to distinguish the route from general activities on the river: a minimum time is specified for this particular section, which you can factor into your day’s plans.

Sindra: Storsjön and Summer Service

In Sindra, a weir and a bridge lead to a picturesque area on the eastern shore of Storsjön. From there, you can see across the entire lake. An easy-to-walk path is suitable for a family outing. As trail conditions can vary locally, it is advisable to check the current situation before your visit.

Every summer, the Church of Sweden holds an outdoor service in Sindra. If this event is important to your trip, check the events for the year in question. The path and the service offer different reasons to visit: you can plan your stay in Sindra around the scenery or, if the timing works, take the summer event into account.

Café, Crafts and Bus Connections

Kalahari in Harmånger has a café serving drinks, sandwiches, sweet pastries, cookies and ice cream. If you are planning a visit, it is best to check the current opening hours. A crafts section sells handicrafts and goods made from reused materials. The café and shop offer different ways to take a break or explore what is available locally.

Bus services run from Harmånger to Bergsjö, Gnarp, Jättendal, Stocka, Strömsbruk and Hudiksvall. If you plan to take one of these services, check the timetable in advance, as availability and times may change.
