Hudiksvall combines historic sites with opportunities for walks and bike rides. If you’re choosing a destination where you can combine culture with outdoor activities, you’ll find a range of options here: from Hälsinglands Museum and Jakobskyrkan to the trails around Lillfjärden and Galgberget. Each attraction and route offers something different, rather than just one way to experience the town.

Culture and history in Hudiksvall

Hälsinglands Museum is a cultural venue for exhibitions, discussions, concerts and guided tours. This offers different ways to engage with culture: you can explore an exhibition, attend a discussion or concert, or get to know Hudiksvall on a guided tour. There’s more to the program than exhibitions alone; the activity that interests you may influence how you plan your stay.

Jakobskyrkan is an important historic landmark and the town’s oldest building. Its foundation stones date from 1643, while the present-day church was consecrated in 1672. These dates mark different stages in its history. The events of 1721 also feature in its story: when the Russians destroyed Hudiksvall, Jakobskyrkan was spared and was largely the only building left standing in the burned-down town. The church can therefore be understood both through its construction history and its role in this turning point.

Fiskarstan adds to these historic impressions as one of Hudiksvall’s best-preserved areas. Fagerströms karamellfabrik offers another way to connect with the town’s history: Emma Fagerström founded it in 1922, and the site is dedicated to candy making for visitors. If you don’t associate culture only with churches and exhibitions, you’ll find a connection to confectionery here. At Mulle Meck in Glada Hudik, children can get creative, use their curiosity and problem-solving skills, and tinker with real equipment and various technical objects.

Walks, waterfronts and Galgberget

Lillfjärden is in the center of Hudiksvall. Its shoreline is about 2.2 kilometers long and is a popular route for walks and jogging. Fishing is also permitted there under the applicable fishing regulations. If you want to fish, check the local rules first. The shoreline’s length and its use for walking or jogging make Lillfjärden a distinct option for outdoor activity by the water.

Galgberget has a walking trail about 2.1 kilometers long, marked with orange markers.

Galgberget also features a range of forest types: spruce forest dominates the northern slope, a rocky pine forest lies at the summit, and a sunlit pine forest is found on the southern side. These areas have very high natural values. Traces of quarries and their associated transport routes have also been preserved on the southern side. The forest, natural values and evidence of the quarrying history offer different themes to explore during a visit to Galgberget.

For walks and bike rides, Hudiksvall’s waterfront promenade runs from Kattvikskajen via Västra hamnen to Håstaholmen. Check local conditions before your visit, as they may change.

Which route suits your interests?

The figures for Lillfjärden and Galgberget refer to different things: for Lillfjärden, it’s the length of the shoreline; for Galgberget, it’s the length of a marked walking trail. So it’s not just the number that matters, but the character of each option. At Lillfjärden, the focus is on the waterfront, walking and jogging; at Galgberget, you’ll also find forest landscapes and preserved traces of quarries. The waterfront promenade, meanwhile, combines walking and cycling with a named route through Kattvikskajen and Västra hamnen to Håstaholmen. This lets you choose among culture, nature and outdoor activities based on the themes you want to shape your stay in Hudiksvall.
